Why is my front righthand break sticking and smoking after a short journey?

its 2001 nissan almera 1.5l
this is just happening all of a sudden this morning.
has it got anything to do with it being exceptionaly cold this morning??
there is smoke and a quite a bit of smoke coming from the pad!
Anybody know if this is serious!! and how much it costs to fix it??

It is a seized brake calliper - but the cause could be just a kink in the hydraulic fluid hose leading to the calliper - so once braking is applied the calliper cant relax again!
Get it properly checked out so you don't get ripped off for parts you don't need.
The smoke was due to friction - you should have the brake pad replaced too as it can be damaged by overheating. |

You've got a seized calliper, don't know how much to fix though, you could probably get a second hand one |

There are usually slide pins inside the caliper which need lubrication. These pins allow the brake pads to retract so they are not pressing on the disc all the time. This lubrication is done at a brake job if you have a competent mechanic. If you get a loaded caliper, this should be done for you. I had this happen on a toyota and it melted off the hubcap. If you are so inclined, you can try to free up the slide pins by removing the caliper, this is what I did; but I think by now it may be too late. |

Caliper has seized. Pad worn out too. Possible disc damage too. You should take car to a garage and hope the damage is not too big. Brake pads on other side should be changed too. Cost? Depends on amount of damage, material parts, labour costs (£20ph upwards depending on where you live), etc. A local garage is cheapest. Halfords may do this type of work, or try Kwik-Fit or Budget. |

Yes very serious get it seen to asap.
It certainly sounds like a seized caliper which means you need both replaced to be safe.
As for cost, no idea but you are looking at least a couple of hundred parts and labour.

Just to add on the caliper, replace both of them never replace just one, have the rotors machined and on the calipers get loaded ones meaning calipers with pads...
Parts and labor if rotors are machinable about $400.00 dollars. |

Hi , I second the seized calliper theory, worth a look.. You may also need to consider looking at the left hand brake, which may be low in pressure, causing all the work to be done by the front right calliper, which would explain the overworking of the brake pads, hence the smoke... Good luck with it.. |
