Why is not wearing a seat belt a violation?

i have a phobia of wearing seat belt because of a major car accident i was in. i was told if i had been wearing my seat belt i would more than likely have died. is this a rare exception? any non-biased statistics on seat belt effectiveness welcome.

i own a repair shop, and i used to be the same way, i got trapped in a car once, and it didn't bother me that much until i heard them say the car might catch on fire ,and i couldn't get out of the belt,so for years i didn't wear mine,,and about three years ago ,i got caught payed a fine, and decided to start wearing it,at first i was a little uncomfortable about it,but after a while you sort of get used to it,and who knows it probably would save me ,in case of a bad wreck, its a law because they actually want to help save our life, most people think this was passed just so they could make more money off of fines, but actually they do care about saving life ,it hasn't never been proven whether or not most people would have survived or not from a bad accident, with the belt, but i figure i got a 50/50 shot at it either way,so why not wear it,if you,ll start wearing it,after a while you,ll get used to it,and you never know,it may some day save your life also,i cant say whether or not it saved mine that time, but i cant say it didn't either, good luck with it,i hope this help,s.

The Doorman
The statistics themselves(although I don't have them to post) say that wearing a seatbelt has saved more lives than it has taken so with that being the case, even though it's hard to believe they truly care, They have made the seatbelt law for what they say is for own good.

The accident where a life is saved because of no seat belt is rare. I was on a volunteer fire brigade for a while. The idea of coming upon a car accident and seeing some dope smeared across hell's half acre after his unbelted body flew through a windshield has always bothered me, and nobody has the right to subject other people to that kind of mess. Believe me, it does happen, and more often than you would like to believe. If you survived an accident that would have killed you if you had a belt on, congratulations, but you have used up your luck for the rest of your life. A minor fender-bender could snap your neck next time. Any insurance company or police force can verify that. Ask if you can spend a Friday or Saturday evening in an emergency room. By the way, my neck was broken in 3 places, and I spent several hours on the operating table, and I was belted in. Without the belt, I would have been dead. My chest would have been crushed, my face smashed, my legs shattered, and then my body bounced off a 3 ton truck and what was left splattered down the side of the truck and onto the road.

In very rare cases wearing a seat belt can indeed increase your chances of death, but in most accidents you'd die without them.

is it a rare exception...yes but accidents like that do occur.
you're better wearing you're seatbelt than not. In all honesty airbags are bigger safety hazards statistically.
I'm totally agree with you when you say you don't feel like you should need to wear one. If you want to get in another accident and possibly kill yourself than that's your business.
I think there are 2 reasons why it's illegal...first the reason i most think is because it's just another way to add a couple of bucks to your ticket or exclusively pull somebody over.
the second reason, which isn't why i really think it's in place is because in some accidents it's actually unsafe to not have a seatbelt on because you become a projectile in the car or possibly out.

There are actually several reasons, but the main reasons for this law are listed below. Not surprisingly, it's about who has to pay for what when you die:

1. If you suffer a fatal death due to not wearing a seat belt and don't have insurance, municipality has to pay for it. And before this law, they did pay for it..in droves. It was very expensive.

People used to complain about what www.ogrish.com used to show on their website before they sold it a few months ago. Paramedics see those extremely grotesque scenes every day. and anyone could see it if they happened to walk by a scene of an accident. The seat belt law cuts down on this grostesqueness.

2. If you are thrown from a car during an accident, you become an extremely dangerous projectile.

3. Airbags are supplemental. That's why they're called SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) Airbags will do nothing to keep you from being tumbled in the car like a clothes dryer does to laundry if the car accidentally rolls down an embankment.

Well, wait till they pass a law to where its not required for them to pay for your death.

The evidence is overwhelming that seat belts save lives in car accidents. The "death due to seat belt" is extremely rare.

This is another example of a mandated law to protect from ourselves. I know even if it was a law, I would still wear the seat belt because it is the safety conscious thing to do.

you can get a ticket cuz if you have an accident and you are thrown from the car, you can get a ticket for scattering shiite.. lol
