It isn't.
It is actually written in "mirror writing", so you can read it clearly when looking in your rear view mirror or side mirrors.
'AMBULANCE' in reverse is 'ECNALUBMA'. That is not how it appears on the front of an ambulance (trust me - take a close look next time you see one...) |

The Human Being
So that it appears the right way round when you see it in the rear view mirror. =) |

christopher_loves_cars
so when drivers infront oof the ambulance look in their mirrors they see the word ambulance the right way round. and move out the way. |

Candy Kisses
So the car in front can read it on the rear view mirror |

Billy's Baby

It's so drivers can read what it says in their rear view mirror if the ambulance is coming up behind them |

threeblindmice
It appears as 'AMBULANCE' in a car's wing or rear view mirror. |

Desiree D
so the car infront of the ambulance can see what is behind them if the person driving couldnt hear. like the radio is too loud. so in the review mirror is looks correct |

foxinsox
So when you see this speeding white truck barreling at you in your rear-view mirror you have another hint that it is an AMBULANCE and to get the heck out of the way before someone dies!! |

bungee

it is the same with fire engines..next time one comes up behind you sirens blaring look in the rear view mirror and you will get your answer...its so you can read it the right way round whilst looking in the mirror. not really clever because the sirens sort of give the game away...chuckle |

mamamaine
The word "Ambulance" is painted in reverse so you can see it when you look out of your rear view mirror. Some drivers don't hear the sirens or pay attention to the flashing lights, but when you see that big word in your mirror...you know it's time to MOVE! Good question... |

naked_brittany
it reads the correct way when you see it in the rear view mirror.. in case the loud blaring sirens and lights dont get your attention i guess :) |

As 'The Human Being' says so that it can be read in your rear view mirror, same as 'ECILOP' and 'ERIF'
Of course, if you were in Wales it would say 'AMBWILANS' or rather 'SNALIWBMA' |

gapsusie
so you can see it clearly in your mirror |

Trevor h
Twisted is the only person with the correct answer so far, give him the 10 pts....its NOT in reverse, it's in the correct order with each letter reversed individually so it appears as AMBULANCE in your mirror. Well done that man....probably won't get the recognition he deserves because his answer is so far down the list!! |
