Why is there braile on the drive up ATM?

I realize that you can walk up to an atm but still what blind person can tell the difference between a bank and a regular builiding
NO OFFENSE TO THE BLIND

Someone else asked a question like yours. Basically it is a way for the blind or physically impaired to maintain a status in society that says they are not shunned but still citizens. If there were no braille on the keys then the person that is blind would not be able to withdraw money quicker than going inside. Secondly it is about offering opportunity for everyone. Ever notice how there are handicapped parking spots? In society it is our duty to look out for those that can't look out for themselves. Also it is about not discriminating against those that do not have the full use of their limbs. They are people and they are citizens just like regular individuals. Its just a duty to look out for them. |

Because there is also braille on the walkup ATMs. This means they only have to produce & stock spares for one model. |

What blind person can tell the difference???
Well...
I CAN
And so can my boyfriend and all of our blind friends.
When you're blind, you still get around and do all the things that everone else in the world does from banking to using a computer. You just do it differently. we learn how to get around without our sight, using canes or guide animals to detect things in our path, and we learn what our surroundings are like by exploring, asking directions, using talking GPS's, being taught how to get to a certain place, reading braille or online maps, and just by knowing that places around us sound or smell or feel like. It's not as weird as it sounds. |

Nobody has gotten this right yet.
The answer is the Americans With Disabilities Act, which mandates reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities in public accommodations, does not distinguish a difference between walk-up ATMs and drive-up ATMs.
It has nothing to do with the mass production of ATMs. The law says you have to have braille. So all ATMs have braille. |

The blind person might be a passenger in a car driven by a sighted person or might know where the bank is. |

Asked & answered dozens of times in Y!A.
The reason is because the ATM machines are mass produced. The manufacturer does not know where any of the ATM's coming off the assembly line are going to be sold to. So all ATM's are made identically. Making different versions of the same model ATM to include braille on some & not others, would cause the cost of manufacturing the ATM's to go up, costing more to purchase them. And when manufacturing costs go up, it is always the lowly consumer that gets the brunt of having to pay more and more and more..........................
EDIT:
Yes the ADA IS mostly the reason why ALL ATM's produced include braille on them. As I stated in my CORRECT RESPONSE- the manufacturer doesn't know where these machines will be sold and installed & since it may or may not be installed in an area that is to be accessable to people with disabilities, all ATM's are produced identically. The poster asked the question specifically why drive up ATM's had braille on them & the answer provided by myself & others answered the question as it was stated instead of reading into it. If the question was "Why do ATM's have braille on them", then yes the logical answer would be "because of the Americans with Disabilities Act, so that everyone has equal access to the ATM's." Isn't it about time for you to rearrange the items in your pocket protector and place a new piece of tape on your nerd glasses? |
