Perhaps you can see from a long way away,
but maybe they can't...?
or maybe they are just being careful because they don't want to KILL someone because they couldn't be bothered slowing down to check the road properly????

You obviously have never approached a clear roundabout and had some Idiot speed on and across the front of you!
How to deal with a roundabout - prepare to stop but look to go - NOT JUST LOOK TO GO AND KEEP GOING!
Post another Question after your impending accident! |

How ironic that you'd ask this in the safety section. I suspect they're doing it to be on the safe side. If you find it that infuriating, you're not mentally fit to drive. |

probably because they need to look extra hard for motorbikes as they do not want to make the mistake and then end up killing a motorcyclist |

cos they don't realise that the give way lines mean give way not stop so they are just bad drivers
EDIT
ah thumbs down from people who stop for give way lines. Give way lines are just that give way, their is always enough space to see if you can pull out without coming to a complete stop so those who do stop un-necessarily are just **** drivers |

They don't understand how to judge what other vehicles are intending to do, mainly because 80% of drivers have either no idea how to signal on rounderbouts or they just cannot be bothered. |

In many places they have adverts on the roundabouts and it would be wasting their money if no one stopped to look. That's the answer to your question. But here's one: Why do people bang into your back when you are stopped at a roundabout and it's obvious that you are giving way to traffic on the right? |

I dunno I am always one step ahead of my self red lights breaking etc but I think its mostly older people (my mum does it) I thinks its cos they have slower brains it takes a while for them to react. |

For the same reason that two cars, traveling in opposing directions on an otherwise empty road will, invariably, meet on the bridge. |

They are waiting for a car to come, and then pull out. I first really noticed it in Coventry, mentioned it to a taxi driver and he said the same. They wait for another car, before pulling out. It's as if they don't believe the road is empty. |

Roundabouts are located at the intersection of two or more roads. Traffic on the left must yield the right-of-way to traffic on the right if they reach the intersection at the same time.
Therefore it is good practice to stop or yield when coming towards a round about intersection. |

Roundabouts are quickly gaining popularity in the United States, which has been behind the times in getting them installed. We trail significantly behind Europe and Australia.
Either you like roundabouts (ROB) or you don't. The thing is that time and time again they have been shown to reduce crashes at an intersection.
One of the problems with roundabouts is getting people used to them. The NC Dept. of Transportation has recently started emphasizing the construction of ROB's instead of traditional signals. We have studied and watched them after they have been built and have found that initially there were problems with confusion as to what to do when you approached them. Over time we saw that people became more and more comfortable with them and navigate them more efficiently. Just last week I went out to see how one of our earlier ROB installations was operating and man let me tell you it was a beautifull sight. I never thought that an intersection could move as many vehicles as was traveling through that ROB.
One thing we have noticed though. There are still some people trying to learn to navigate them and then there are those people who are used to them and are trying to fly through them. This mixes for some very close calls. It is my hope that over time everyone will be comfortable but will treat them with respect. |
