there's your answer, right there in the first post:

"Immaturity and lack of driving experience..."

How do you get driving experience if you can't drive?

Think about it...what happens if you raise the driving age to 18 or 20 or 21? Now all your "inexperienced" drivers no longer living under the watchful eye of their parents.

Furthermore, victims can't get restitution for the damage because as adults, parents are no longer responsible for the new drivers, and they haven't progressed in their careers yet to the point of having any assets.

Furthermore, "inexperienced drinkers" and "inexperienced drivers" will become one and the same...if you think drunk driving is a problem now, just wait until drunks who've only been driving for six months start getting behind the wheel.

Add a "maturity" requirement and lower the driving age. Everybody knows maturity can be measured.

The ONLY thing I can think of is for some type of rural emergency...like, dad loses his leg in a piece of equipment. This 14 year-old who drives on the farm, most likely, should be allowed to drive the truck to a hospital legally. Maybe there could be some sort of permit...like you take a BASIC written and driving test so they they know what to do.

Sorry...it's all I could think of...because it shouldn't be lowered at all!

It shouldn't.

There are no reasons to lower it and there are a lot of reasons to raise it.

JULY 2008

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 15- to 20-year olds.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 3,490 drivers in this age group died in motor vehicle crashes in 2006 and an additional 272,000 were injured.

Drivers age 15- to 20-years old accounted for 12.9 percent of all the drivers involved in fatal crashes and 16 percent of all the drivers involved in police-reported crashes.

Twenty-five percent of teen drivers killed were intoxicated. In 2006 (latest data available) crashes involving 15 to 17 year olds cost more than $34 billion nationwide, in medical costs, property damage and other costs, according to an AAA analysis.

Among licensed drivers, young people between the ages of 15 and 20 have the highest rate of fatal crashes relative to other age groups, including the elderly.

In fact, the risk of being involved in a fatal crash for teens is three times greater than for drivers age 65 to 69.

Immaturity and lack of driving experience are the two main factors leading to the high crash rate among teens.
