Why should we bail out the car makers,I say let them sink,any body?

No. Two reasons why this isn't a good idea. The first reason is because a bail out of all of the auto makers that are sinking would put the government further in debt. We are already in enough debt as it is as a country. The government doesn't need anymore burden on its shoulder. It would also increase the government spending which would increase government's role in our lives which is never a good thing. Government intervention is good only when needed, but the whole purpose of our democracy is to have a smaller government not larger. Secondly, if we let them sink then that means more jobs will be lost. I think the key here is for the auto makers to cut back on spending themselves. That is one reason why they are falling behind. They are making too much too fast. They need to have budgets so that they can meet the demands.

Do you have any idea of how many workers would lose their jobs? Then they won't be able to buy goods and other companies will go out of business. They will go on welfare and your taxes will be used to support them.
If this country doesn't produce goods like cars, it will turn into a third world country that has to buy more than it sells.

There's too many people depending on the automotive industry to just let the companies sink. Certainly something needs to be done, and certainly the executives that let the company sink should be fired.

The government should be the final, last line before the companies go all out bankrupt. The domestics should be prepared for a complete restructuring, lots of factories shutting down, lots of people out of work, and I would hope that all the executives are cleared out... whatever it takes to convince someone, other than the government, to save the company.

what happens when we let them sink....a lot of people will loose jobs. some with good skills. with the chevy volt coming out in the 4th quarter of 2010, i believe this bailout idea will become a thing of the past. i can't, however, speak for f**d or chrysler.

The FED's has enough to do, They do not want too take over car industries.
Let the people do what they do best and build cars, Did you ever think that if the fed's toke over, that a lot of people would lose there job;s. Now think about that!!!

I don't agree with any of these bail outs, they should be held accountable for their stupid business practices and be treated like any other business. In tough times what do retail stores and restaurants do? They run sales and lower their prices. Here we have seen these stupid car companies building these behemoths and try to sell them in the face of an oil price increase, that's just bad business, if they had stared making more efficient cars we nor them would be in the mess we're in. So I think if they do end up bailing them out they should make them produce cars that can get at least 50mph or all bets are off, give them till the end of the year to have their whole fleet to this level or they will be penalized double the bail out cost.

What's needed is to allow these companies to go into Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Unlike a complete liquidation, a Chapter 11 bankruptcy allows a company to reorganize, be freed of some debt, break onerous union contracts, freely fire employees and other such things that allow a company to rebuild itself.

A government bailout Band-aid accomplishes nothing; these companies are in need of open-heart surgery.

Of course, the myopic management of these companies insists on robbing us, the taxpayer, rather than taking the lumps for their own terrible business decisions.

We can send millions and millions in aid to other countries yearly, but we shouldn't help out one of the largest manufacturing sectors right here in CANADA? Interesting. Help them out, but make it clear that it isn't free money!

The huge number of people employed directly and indirectly in the automotive industry pay taxes and stimulate the economy. Do we really need more people on unemployment if this sector is brought down to its knees? Hmmm....Is the average Canadian doomed to become a Dollar Store, Wall Mart or service sector employee?

One more thing folks....give up slamming the products that are made by Ford, GM etc. I had a Honda product (expensive repairs, rust) but the last two Ford products were fantastic, and I'll look into a Ford again when the time comes. I care about where products are made and care about who makes them, and of course the quality. It would help if more people would consider these things.

I live to see MADE IN CANADA. Let's support our people and industry.
