Why shouldn't the driving age be lowered to 14?

most teenagers around the ages of 18 and 21 get into more accidents because they're old enough to drive. so why should it be lowered???

14 year olds are children. They are just getting started in high school. Boys are discovering girls and girls are discovering boys. It is bad enough that 16 and 17 y.o. kids do not have the maturity and responsibility to operate a high powered, high speed machine plus they are not legally responsible for their actions. To add younger children to this mix would be insane.. |

The younger you are, the higher the crash rate is. The majority of 14 year olds are honestly just not ready for the responsibility of driving. |

14 year olds are emotional and careless. I dont want a pissed off little girl to ram into me because her mommy said no to letting her date a guy twice her age.
it should not be lowered because 14 year olds are irresponsible.
granted 18-21 year olds can be the same way, but Im 21 and I have never been in a accident, and I would have should I have gotten my license at 14.

As you point out, teenagers have a high accident rate. As a matter of fact, my only accident happened when I was 16. Therefore, there is no good reason to lower it. Some states are talking about raising it. |

I consider 14 to be too young still. |

if there were 14 year old drivers they would have so many crashes. and youd always have the midget 14 year old driving a big truck they cant look over the dash |

Because you should be worrying about school and not driving and keeping jobs to pay for cars and insurance. The driving age should be 18. Our graduation rate is dropping every year and our kids' intelligence level compared to other countries is embarrassing. |

Uh...you are contradicting yourself!
First you ask "Why SHOULDN'T the driving age be lowered..."
Then you end with "Why SHOULD it be lowered"?
Which one do you mean? It can't be both! |

driving requiers mental abilities that i m not sure that are ready developed by the age of 18, if ur not considering how a 14 year old understands responsibilities and the fact that cars have to be payed for, gas should not be wasted.kids have better things to focus on than driving. |

imagine if it were even lower. They don't get into more accidents because they're older it's because someone wasn't paying attention or a dog ran in the road, etc. I've been in 3 accidents. My first I was 16 and this 40 year old man hit me while smoking a joint. my second I was 21 with my daughter and a doctor hit me head on and almost killed us both that also was not my fault. The 3rd time I was on my way to work stopped at a red light when a much older woman ran into me and when I asked her if she was ok she asked me why I backed up into her! she had to of been 90 years old. It shouldn't be lowered younger people aren't fully mature so they may not pay as much attention to they're surroundings. Also most are shorter so they have to be closer to the wheel to reach the pedals which can be dangerous |

because if you think about it if 18 and 21 year olds get into this much trouble driving imagine if the driving age gets lowered to 14 there will be more accidents and this will create dangerous person in general, but put them behind a 4000 lb mobile death machine, and this makes every single one of them a ticking time bomb.
And besides kids at 14 still have growing to do, and maturing.
The minimum age to drive a motor vehicle 17, so i think it should just be left at that.
Hope i helped

OCTOBER 2008
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 15- to 20-year olds.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 3,490 drivers in this age group died in motor vehicle crashes in 2006 and an additional 272,000 were injured.
Drivers age 15- to 20-years old accounted for 12.9 percent of all the drivers involved in fatal crashes and 16 percent of all the drivers involved in police-reported crashes.
Twenty-five percent of teen drivers killed were intoxicated. In 2006 (latest data available) crashes involving 15 to 17 year olds cost more than $34 billion nationwide, in medical costs, property damage and other costs, according to an AAA analysis.
Among licensed drivers, young people between the ages of 15 and 20 have the highest rate of fatal crashes relative to other age groups, including the elderly.
In fact, the risk of being involved in a fatal crash for teens is three times greater than for drivers age 65 to 69.
Immaturity and lack of driving experience are the two main factors leading to the high crash rate among teens. |
