This is an insurance regulation. The idea of static electricity starting a fire has put companies on alert to protect themselves. Sliding across the seat while the pump is running can cause the same effect. Filling plastic fuel cans in the back of a pick-up truck with a plastic bedliner is also a cause. |

Somewhere along the line, somebody got the idea that a cell phone might/could produce a spark and ignite fumes from the fuel....
Not likely, but the caution signs popped up anyway. Not that I make it a habit to be on the phone when I'm getting fuel, but I wouldn't worry about taking a call if someone happens to ring you while you're filling your tank. |

It's because of a potential risk, real or imagined, for a fire to be started.
There have been fires which might have been caused by a spark from a mobile, so for safety's sake they brought the rule in. The jury is still out, one school of thought thinks it IS possible, another thinks it ISN'T. However, just in case . . . better safe than sorry.
Strange things can happen with petrol; my late dad had an army-learned trick of pouring petrol on top of a metal drum and then stubbing a cigarette out in it. Nothing ever happened. Never had the nerve to try it myself . . . |

You should not use mobile phones or open or close your car doors after you have started the pump pumping because the phones as well as the doors could cause a spark and ignite the gas in the pump as well as the gas supply below the petrol station. I used to think this was just rubbish until about 2 weeks ago a person was burned badly and the car exploded from using a mobile phone. Now.. I listen and I get off the phone before using the petrol pump! |

The reason why you should not use a mobile phone at petrol or gas pumps is because they can cause fire or fire related injuries. Studies have shown that the electromagnetic waves can cause sparks in the gas lines which can cause personal injury and spark a fire. Whenever you are pumping gas you always want to leave your cellphone in the car. |
