Why we don't have seat belts on school buses?

I wondered about the same thing. Someone told me that it was because if there were an accident and the bus needed to be evacuated, small children might not be able to free themselves from the seatbelts, therefore creating the potential for more tragedy (for example, if the bus were on fire). Theoretically the seat backs are high enough to prevent the riders from being propelled forward, which lowers the risk when they do not wear seatbelts. Assuming they ride properly, seated in the seat and not bouncing into the aisles.

actually most if not all school buses now do but only smaller kids are usually required to wear them. college age(over 18) wouldnt be.the bus they were on i believe was a chartered bus not a school bus.thats what i saw on the news.i m not sure if the charter(greyhound type ) buses do have them. there again over 18 its not a law to make them wear them.

I think your cause is so commendable, and I totally agree with it. So many kids have been killed in accidents on buses and it could have been prevented.

The real problem is that in most places if the occupants are under 16-18 yo the driver is responsible to ensure everyone uses a seatbelt. It would be too expensive to constantly check every kid. The other reason has to do with the legal liability if they didn't constantly check every kid and someone got hurt.

If lawmakers exempted busses from those rules they would have seatbelts. If it isn't fair and economical the bus companies will fight it all the way.

The expense added onto new buses and the expense of retrofitting the one already in use. As with many things it boils down to $$$$$.

This is a very valid and pertinent question. Perhaps one of the reason for no seat belts in the school buses is that school buses are driven within the internal city roads - not at high speeds, and not on the highways. Also, the impact of a shock is first taken by the front and back portion of the bus which is designed to take that strong shock). However, I still think it is important to have an extra safety precaution, by having the seat belts in the school buses.

I kind of wonder'd that too...and I wonder if David's life would have been spared if he had a seat belt on........he was ejected from the bus before it fell :(

I agree within the safety of seat belts. They should also put some in school buses.
