Why would I get in trouble for walking around drunk when I left my car at the bar?

I know you shouldn't drive drunk so I just decided to walk the 8 miles or so home. Why would a cop harass me about that? I told him I left my car at the bar and he said I couldn't walk around drunk. I told him it was an odd night and I didn't have much choice. He still didn't care! Luckily I had a fake ID on me so the ticked he gave me went to a fake person.

most states have a law against public intoxication. however in your case walking home so you didnt drive drunk, i think the cop shoulda gave you a ride the rest of the way.

Public drunkenness is a crime too...that's why. Get rid of the fake ID...that will only put you in jail.

In many areas, public intoxication is illegal - that is, you cannot appear in public (eg. on the streets) while you are drunk.

Hence, you should have either waited it off or get someone (or a taxi) to bring you home. You did have a choice with the taxi or staying at the bar.

What if the situation had been that you drove 100mi away from home to go to a bar, and you need to get back? Would it be OK to be drunk driving in such a situation? After all, you don't have "much of a choice" in that situation either.

I understand your point but you are supposed to take a cab or a ride if you can't drive, you could've asked the cop for a ride.
