Will I like driving with more practice?

I have had my permit for about two years, but I can't bring myself to ever drive. I've probably driven less than ten times total. Driving makes me feel shaky, nervous and forgetful (I have to have someone tell me where to go turn-by-turn, even in my OWN city). What can I do to drive better without ending up hating it? Additional Details I completed driver's education that my school offered when I was fifteen (I'm seventeen now). I had to drive with the instructor for six hours total, and he told me I was a good driver but needed to stop panicking.
After I drive, my muscles are all sore from being soooo tense while driving.

I got my driver's liscense when I was 18 but I NEVER gain the ability or confidence to independently drive with ease until I was 24. (My parents wouldnt let me take a car when I went to college.) My dad taught everyone in my family to drive except for me because I have Asperger's Syndrome and I could not cooperate with his high-stress method of teaching. I barely passed the driving portion of Driver's Ed but I did very well on the test portion.
I found that the longer I got to drive by myself...the better I got and the more I enjoyed driving. You may have to cope with other people driving with you a couple of times to ensure that you can at least find the easiest and safest roads to drive to school or work. Take your time getting used to the roads where you live. Try and give yourself a few months of driving practice before you get on the highway (but I would avoid the highway at all if you can) and don't even consider parallel parking unless they're the only parking spots around. Avoid using radios or cell phones while driving for a few years.
Another thing to do...everytime you're in a car and are not driving: look at your surroundings. Look at and learn about all the different streets and icons and where they intersect. You could try even walking around the town you live in if possible and learn about the major streets and the common places you go and where they're located.
If you go to college: convince your parents to let you take a car. If you spend too much time away from driving it becomes increasingly difficult to preserve the skill and experience of driving with ease. |

you just need to know you safe. there is nothing to be scared of. you need to be confident with yourself. just drive on one road for a wile than move on to driving around the block and from there you'll be fine with driving everywhere. |

You didn't say what city you are in, but maybe get somebody to drive you out into the country where you can practice without so much traffic.
You (well most people) do get less nervous with the more practice they get.
Good Luck

Not everyone can drive. Can you ride a bicycle? If so, maybe a motor scooter such as a Yamaha Vino would be more to your liking. Have you gone to a professional driving school such as the one from AAA? Professional instruction does a lot for easing those misgivings that make you nervous and shakey. |
