i need to haul a yard of gravel in my truck, which is a 3/4 ton ford diesel from 1985. I will be only hauling it for around a mile, will not be going up any hills, only down one for about 50 yards.

yeah it will handle it I have hauled more then that in all my trucks I have owned. My current truck is a Ford F250SD and have had it loaded with about 2 ton of stone and had no problems and hauled it 12 miles.

yes it will be fine just don't slam on the breaks or any thing like that take it slow
