A reasonable increase in our motorway speed limit..??
I use the motorways in Britain frequently, seldom do I see drivers sticking to the limit...The average seems to be around 80 mph, is it time therefore to increase the limits..
Bearing in mind that the Association of Chief Police Officers recommended the increase 2 years ago and were ignored, by the then Home Secretary..

Hi,
I totally agree with the police & others on this one.
I do a fair bit of motorway driving, and anyone going along at 70mph can be a hazard.
I personally do about 80-85 mph, and then have flashing fools behind wishing to do 100mph. or more.
I came across an elderly driver in the inside lane a few days ago, doing about 50mph, with big trucks in a queue behind.
This is clearly not a safe state of affairs.
I would not totally de-restrict, as on some German Autobahns, but as most average cars are capable of well over 100mph, it must be safer to say it is OK to do 80.

Nice idea and I would love it, but it wont work and it aint gonna happen either in our lifetimes. Trouble is, too many issues, here's some:
1. Too much traffic - you are lucky if you can ever average 60 MPH never mind 80.
2. Nobheads, if the speed limit is 50, they drive at 60, if the speed limits 70, they drive at 80 - and so on. If you increase it to 80, well the ***** will drive at 90 wont they?
3. The shortage a fuel in the UK. The faster you drive, the more the MPG goes down - according to my fuel guage anyways. The PC greens aren't going to like that!
4. Our roads just are not suitable. It's not like the autobahn in Germany (I've driven there at 100 MPH right through Germany. Their roads are better and safer.
5. Our driving standards are appalling by e.g. German standards. We need to take a good hard look at educating motorists (many foriegn visitors as well as immigrants that drive here on a licence from Lalaland). AND, rethink our highway code as well. |

Since cars got better tyres, disc brakes, safety belts traction control, cruise control et al, the speed limits have been reduced i.e. 20 mph, 30 mph and top speed 70mph. When will the Government realise that these limits are not targets, and allow people to drive accordingly. Safely to suit the road conditions prevailing at the time. This Government is out to tax the car off the road (except for Ministers - who are too important). When we are all back in our caves, eating wheat we have grown ourselves cooking on twig fires, then the Labour Gov. will be content. |

Yes I agree, Motorways are our safest roads. Modern cars are capable of moving and stopping much better than they were however many years ago the current limits were introduced. Right thats two of us what now? |

I agree. The speed limit was set in the days when cars relied on cable brakes and cross ply tyres.Technology has moved on and cars are a lot safer now. |

Because quite a lot of people will always drive above the speed limit whatever it is. Increase it to 80 and they would think they could get away with 90. Our motorways are too congested to allow high speed driving. that's why there are so many 50mph restrictions at congestion hotspots. |

The 70mph speed limit may have been appropriate when it was set, 40 years ago.
Anyone who blithely says "The 70mph speed limit is there for a reason", evidently doesn't know the truth. The 70mph limit was a wholly arbitrary figure, set without any basis in science or safety. It was basically a 'guesstimate' for the maximum speed by the then Ministry of Transport Safety Committee.
Cars had drum brakes, cross-ply tyres, steel dashboards, solid steering wheels, no crumple zones, no ABS, no airbags and there was no legal requirement to wear seat-belts when that 70mph limit was set.
Here we are in 2008 - vehicle safety has progressed, but our speed limits haven't. |

No, they need the money made from speeding tickets to fund this failing economy |

I think no matter what the limit is people will always go over it. my limit seems to be 10mph more than the limit so maybe thats why everyone seems to do 80? i think 70mph is ok, i would personally like to do more but then seeing how catastrophic some accidents are then it should stay as it is! |
