Believe it or not, the best thing you can do is not drive on ice if you can help it.
But I understand the nature of necessity, sometimes we just need to go places.
My best advice for you is to take your time and just go slow. You may not have any problem getting your car going, and in the same breath you may not be able to stop.
Keep lots of distance between you and the vehicles around you.
If you start slipping put your tires over the unpacked snow to slow down. While your driving try not to panic. If you slide it in the ditch and walk away unharmed that's great.
Just take your time and respect the road conditions.
Good luck |

Go to an empty parking lot and drive around. Slam on the brakes,do slides etc. Have someone with you who understands how cars react and can teach you how to get out of trouble. It may sound strange but experience is the best teacher. |

Like most of the people here have said. Take it slow. You also might go to the local hardware store and get some tube sand. I put at least 250 pounds in the bed of my mini-truck. Helps you stay on the road.
Also notice that many of the people wrecked on the news are SUV drivers. Just because it will go anywhere, doesn't mean it can STOP! Snow tires help. Studded may be available in your area but check local laws. |

You will learn as time goes on. Just remember, to much fear or not enough, are both dangerous. You need some, so that you respect the road, and fellow drivers. But experience is best, and the only way to ascertain this, is to do it. |

When the snow starts melting on the road, the car in front creates spray.....and it goes on your windscreen.....you ARE TOO CLOSE. Keep your distance such that you never get spray on your screen.
Always drive in a gear higher than the gear you would normally be in. This prevents high torque being applied to your driving wheels, hence maintaining your grip.
Check your lights frequently, make sure they are clear of snow, see and be seen.
If you are going on a long trip, throw a sleeping bag in the back of the car...just in case. |

all you can really do is be extremely careful about it, at the same time don't be afraid of the ice and snow ,if your afraid of it you will make more mistakes,at the same time don't be over confident either, drive with lots of caution,it takes time to learn to drive in the snow and ice really good, many years of driving will take place before you really know how to handle a car really good on snow and ice, just be careful, and good luck. |

Go slow, especially through turns. go slower than you think you need to, and you should be safe. |

To me its not "drive slow". You want to keep your distance from other vehicles more in the snow and ice. This recognizes the longer braking times and greater braking distances.
My best advice to you is to not drive like an a**hole. Don't run yellow lights, accelerate rashly or make questionable passes, improper lane changes, etc. Respect the road conditions, signal, give yourself time to brake, keep an escape plan and, above all, don't panic. These are, of coyrse, important at all times but doubly or trebly so in winter driving conditions. It's almost always the a**hole that causes the winter accident, fishtailing out of driveways, rearending people or turning from the wrong lane. Don't let snow and ice turn you into granny, driving at 20 mph on the highway. |

the best thing for you to so if JUST got your license is to stay off the streets in your car. i don't want to have to scrape you out of the ditches due to the fact that you are an inexperienced driver and don't know how to really handle a car. not to mention in the winter.
drive after the winter is over, save a life it might be yours. |

it'd be safer if you use a 4x4 SUV or an AWD car
try not to tailgate anyone and be very very cautious |
