Winter tires are not like All-Season tires. Winter tires have special rubber compounds designed to improve traction, handling and braking in all cold weather conditions, not just ice and snow.

Winter Tires are designed to deliver safety and control in snow, ice, and cold weather conditions.

Many people think that all-season tires can deliver this same performance, but this is not true.

The superior traction that winter tires deliver, as much as a 25 to 50 percent increase over all-season tires, can very well be the margin you need to stop in time or turn to avoid trouble.

I'm glad you asked this question. My ex and I were JUST arguing about this issue and my daughter's car. Judging by the answers..I guess he won. We're getting the winter tires for her car. Now I have to go tell him he was right...grrrr...lol!

Winter tire are just that for WINTER no tread life warrenty or rating, Not recommended for spring or summer as will only last about 8-10 k mikes. They will outperform most all season tires. Help Granpma out tire rack does offer steel wheels and winter tire sets that come balanced and mounted , for winter swap tires out and store all season tires. If this is not posssible a good set of all season tires with a A traction rating, new tread of 11/32 would be next best bet. Safe driving OK.

I was once told that All Season Tires are really "No Season Tires". They're a compromise between tread wear and traction. The problem with winter is that the colder it gets the less traction your tires are able to provide - even dry asphalt becomes slippery with all season tires in cold temperatures. Winter tires are usually made from a softer compound which allows them to keep traction even in really low temperatures. On top of that, all season tires can only cope with dry or wet surfaces. Their tread design cannot provide traction in slush, snow or ice. Winter tires usually have a much deeper thread and more sharp edges to be able to dig into snow or grip on ice.
You will notice there are many different types of winter tires as well. Some will provide better performance on ice, others will excel in snow and others will provide you with a compromise between the two.
If you live in an area where the temperature drops under freezing point or where you get regular snowfalls, you will notice a marked difference between all season and dedicated winter tires.

For the winter mount a set of winter tires. Difference in traction is amazing. Much better than All-Season tires in vogue today.
I have been using Bridgestone Blizzaks for about 10 winters. They have saved me from being in several accidents. The first save payed for the tires and rims. Cost of insurance deductible is about the price of the tires and rims.
I bought mine from the Tire Rack of South Bend, Indiana.

in the hand of a good driver, all season tires work perfectly fine in winter.

I have been driving all season toyo spectrum for the last 4 harsh Connecticut winter. It really helps if you have a stick shift. Also it depends on how steep is the hill around your house. Any hill with slope of 1, with standard deviation of .5, you're going to have a hard time.
