I got all season tires on my new car. This winter I'm planning on buying a package of 4 winter tires with steel rims but it's a bit pricey. Should I go for it or stick with the old ones?

Winter tires are not like All-Season tires. Winter tires have special rubber compounds designed to improve traction, handling and braking in all cold weather conditions, not just ice and snow.
Winter Tires are designed to deliver safety and control in snow, ice, and cold weather conditions.
Many people think that all-season tires can deliver this same performance, but this is not true.
The superior traction that winter tires deliver, as much as a 25 to 50 percent increase over all-season tires, can very well be the margin you need to stop in time or turn to avoid trouble. |

Questions only you can answer:
How much and often does it snow where you live/work? Do the road crews get right to it with plows to/from your commute?
When it snows, are you expected to be at your job regardless; such as EMT-firefighter-Doctor-shift work-etc
Although all season tires are a compromise, they can work as well as dedicated snow tires in some conditions. I stopped using snow tires yrs ago; partly the expense and storage, partly I need not drive when it does snow.

The rims can be bought used from a wrecker for half price . The tires really are not an additional expense since you save the wear and tear on your summer tires.
I however don't have snow tires - around here when do we ever drive in deep snow ? |

If you have deep tread on the all season they work very well, but they will not give quite the traction winter tread would. I live in the snow belt south of lake erie and all I have run for years is all season on a two wheel drive car. It does depend a lot on driver skill to safely drive on ice and snow< |

It depends on how good your old tires still are and the location and weather of where you are.
So my advice is to go ask and expert around your area!
