I live in Philadelphia and I want to visit my mother in Detroit. I don't have anyone to accompany me. Would it be safe to go alone? Would it be unwise to carry a shopping bad with me on the train?

The Amtrak is generally very safe. There's a lot of people on-board, and it's much safer than Greyhound.
You should be able to go alone, but make sure that you don't appear like an easy target. Dress simple, try not to use a shopping bag.
Just remember - for the most part, everything's safe. There's only a few isolated cases. In fact, even if you hitchhiked, chances are, nothing's going to happen to you. The risk is incredibly small as-is, and it's just social norms to avoid even those almost non-existent risks. |

there are alot of ppl on the train so you will be okay :) if i were you i would have someone walk me to the train and have your brother meet you when you get off the train so there is no chance of you being alone. I would be nerves too but if you do it that way, things will be fine. Noone is going to bug you with an audience :D and brothers are great to have around. Have a good visit :) |

i'm 18 and travel back adn forth from philadelphia university and my home on a train alone. i havent had any major problems, but def don't go at night or anything like that. i dont think the shopping bag thing is that good of an idea, bring something that closes completly. |

You should be okay but the guy saying it's "usually safe" must not ride the train.
I took a two-day trip once on the train and it was just awful. Every type of scumbag you can imagine. So be careful. |
