ford, at one time had multiple break lights, and more would light, depending on how hard you pressed.
so it would have just the outer ones for light application, and the inner ones would light up when you pressed harder.
i always thought that this was a really really good idea. especially for city traffic.
way to go Ford, way to scrap one of the best ideas for cars. |

The original academic safety study for third brake lights back in the 70's had the third light flashing at a rate proportional to the rate of deceleration so that the harder you brake, the quicker it would flash. It would only be on solid when actually stopped.
The study proved that such an arrangement significantly improved safety but by the time the legislators and the automobile manufacturer lobbyists got through with it, the third light didn't flash.
it's just like airbags, the safety studies were based on having over 160 collision sensors but by the time the big three brought it to market, there's only three sensors. |

Yes it would really help, if the car brakes applied forcefully in an emergency situation and brake lights flash more brightly, a signal for the fellow driver coming behind you that you have applied the brakes in an emergency. |

NO, that would simply confuse me. The current method that the brake lights come on as soon as you press the pedal in is better. Sure you don't know if it is a gentle break or slamming, BUT if you are giving the proper distance you start to slow down when they hit their breaks and can still stop in time. |
