Would you take these roads right now? Trapped in WV with possible ice.?

Ok, so we need a ref. Please look at this map and tell me if you would take them right now. We were driving from NC to Madison, WI

Had to stop last night due to the ice storm through the region.

We are in a hotel and trying to decide if it is safe enough to go out.

Husband wife and two kids traveling ages 5 and 13.

We have to take Interstate 77 Interstate 64 and Interstate 65 to get home...

I live in North Central WV and right now in this part of the state the earlier rain has changed back over to snow.

The front is coming out of the west from Indiana & Ohio, so the weather we are going to have in a few hours is what they are probably having there now. Also, and I hate to say it, but most of the surrounding states do keep their major highways & interstates a lot clearer than what WVDOH does. So you may see snow covered lanes on the interstate here, but get into Ohio & they have all lanes clear, are well salted & wet.

If you are coming up I-77 from Bluefield to Charleston- that area is the worst area for possible problems due to the mountainous area there. Now the WV Turnpike section of I-77 & I-64 does have a pretty good road crew keeping that portion as clear as possible. Once you get into the Charleston metro area & on into Huntington, then towards KY- you will have better traveling since it's not as hilly. There is a bridge at the state line going out of WV into KY on I-64, so watch for possible icing conditions on the bridge. It has been a few years since I drove in KY, but I do not recall any major problem areas between the WV/KY state line & Louisville where you will pick up I-65. Once it gets close to dark, then you may want to locate a motel to call it quits until morning to prevent the risk of icy road conditions after the temperatures drop below freezing.

Well, I think you need to make that decision based on what the weather reports are saying. I actually live in the north east and I can tell you that the roads in my area, and even in the West Virginia, are horrible. It is not a good idea to drive on icy roads. What you need to do is use good judgment in this situation. It is not a good idea to drive on icy roads because you will likely end up in an accident. Cars weren't built to drive on icy conditions even with all season or snow tires. It is really up to you. My thoughts are to stay where you are until the weather reports show that the roads are clear, and the conditions are safe. But overall it is up to you. I would stay where you are rather than risk the safety of you and your family.
