That questions been asked for many years, by lots of folks. Here's the answer: The reason is, they just don't need them. School buses are the safest form of ground transportation on earth, bar none. Safer than walking. Safer than staying home, in fact. It's fine if the government ads them, but really, it's not needed.

When I was a kid, the school buses did have ash trays, though. Just kidding.

ask your legislator. all school buses manufactured after 2006 are required to have seat belts for the psgrs. older school buses dont have to be retrofitted. at least in CA.

i don't think any school buses have seat belts lol. they are so big that no ordinary car is of much threat.

they dont have it in wisconsin either but i think it may be because it would be innefective and most kids probably wouldnt wear them anyway

Most buses dont because they are unnecessary. For the most part in any accident the bus is going to be larger than the other vehicle and the simple laws of physics would make it so that the children are safe.

There was a study years ago that showed it would probably do more harm than good to have seat belts due to children misusing them, and possibly becomming traped because of all the children on the bus.There was alot of convincing evidence to suggest that they simply are not universal enough in size to accomodate all children safely. Some states have recently begun to add them back into buses but some other states are simply not won over for the need to have them. Smaller buses though do typically have belts as they lack the physical attributes that make the larger ones safe.

I have heard that if a school bus is in an accident, seatbelts prohibit students from getting out of the bus.

I was going to work for First Student Bus company last year.

They said kids would be hitting each other with the seat-belts

In small buses they have them for handicapped children to be safe while driving around town.

Compartmentalization, a concept seen frequently on commercial airplanes, involves seating passengers in rows of padded seats with cushioned backs.

The belief is that during frontal or rear impact, the most common types of wrecks involving school buses, passengers would either be pushed back into their seats or thrown forward into the padded backs of the row ahead.

The use of seat belts might require stiffer seats, which would negate the theory of compartmentalization.

It is also feared that some students would receive internal injuries from seat belts through a process called submarining, the tendency for a body to slide downwards during impact.

Seat belts on school buses may also hamper rescue or evacuation efforts, as adults or older students may have to spend precious minutes unbuckling young or disoriented passengers.

Unruly students could also use the heavy buckles as makeshift weapons, creating even more of a safety hazard.

There is also the argument that seat belts would only protect passengers of school buses during unusual events such as roll-overs or flips, not other possible accidents such as fires or submersion.

Considering the expense of retrofitting current school buses or replacing entire fleets with approved seat belt systems, the benefits of seat belt use do not currently outweigh the liabilities.

It isn't federally mandated thats why. My mom works for a school district in Illinois, and she said they are just now putting into effect a law to require them on buses. Although, she works with the special ed students, so I don't know if its just those buses or all buses.

To slow down the huge increase in population.
I would guess since the average American isn't very intelligent, they probably couldn't take off a seatbelt fast enough to get out of the bus in time in case something were to happen. Plus, it's probably more likely that a bus will catch on fire (or something else that would require a quick escape) than get into an accident where seatbels could've protected the students.
