What do you do? It's my perception that if the right pointing arrow is RED, you have to wait until it turns GREEN to go. However, I've been honked at several times for sitting there waiting, while having people in the center turn lane pull out on the red right arrow stoplight and turn right. I feel that if it was going to be ok for you to turn on red, they would've left it as a normal red light, instead they made it an arrow indicating that those turning right have to stop on red, go on green.
Am I incorrect?

The red arrow light is designed to be specific to the right turn lane, and to avoid confusing people who are continuing straight through the intersection. This is a new federal standard which is already in some states, and is going to be put in place in all 50 states beginning this year.
Unless there is a sign stating otherwise, It is legal to turn right on a red arrow after coming to a complete stop, and checking cross traffic to insure the intersection is clear and it is safe to proceed. |

It depends on the law in your state. In NH, where I'm from, it's legal to make a right turn on red as long there is not a 'no right turn on red' sign. However, in MA, it is illegal at all times to take a right turn on red. Check the laws in your state. |

Hi A lot of Sates have a Law where it's ok to make a right hand turn after coming to complete stop even if you have a red light. |

you are correct, the red arrow indicates the the turning lanes are stopped, the traffic on your right is mandated by there own lights. The arrows save confusion when multiple lights are up, so no one in the continuing traffick sees your red light and slams on brakes, they see the arrow and realize that the red light is for the turning lane and vice versa. |

I think that you are correct in waiting for the green. We have the right turn arrows in Florida, but they also have signs. Many intersections here have two right turn lanes. The sign for the right turn lane says Right on red only after stop. The left, right turn lane will say no right turn on red this lane. So you are not incorrect. Better safe than sorry. |

The arrow only indicates the light is dedicated. Example, if you are facing north, waiting to turn east, the east and west bound traffic has dedicated left turn lanes, when there arrows show green your's should also turn green, even though your straight through lanes are still red. This is because no one else at that time would have right of way over you. Your red arrow should always be observed as any red light. If it is not posted that right turn on red is illegal, then you can turn IF nothing is coming. Sorry, but you are incorrect. |

i would think that you can go through *ONLY* if it is safe to do so and it is permitted to do so where you live. some places you can make a right on red and others you cannot...other than that the people behind you are wrong and you are right..so just block them out. |
