Your best and worst driving habits?
|
We all have good and skillful habits when it comes to driving but pretty much everyone also has (even if they think they haven't) a bad habit or too, I certianly would av thought.
What are your personal good and bad habits when it comes to driving?
Mine are
Good: Paying full attention, thinking ahead, driving appropiate speed for the road, not letting bad drivers get over me, good patience when it comes to slow vehicles like learner drivers etc
Bad: Occasionally drifts off from concentration (knowing that even litreally a few seconds lapse can end in disaster), gets easily intimidated by bad drivers annoying me (like if someones tailgating me, driving behind me with full beams, cuts me up etc)
I know I have the good and bad too but we all do.
Thing I don't get is drivers who think they are 100% perfect just cos they may stick to every rule of the road, not have points on their license, been driving longer etc and think that cos of that they can critisize people who have broke rules, we all have strengths and weaknesses even in our driving. Whether we've been driving a few months or over 50 years we all have room for improvement. We've all broken rules of the highway code, most of us sensible ones may only do minor ones and rarely do it deliberatly or anything serious. I'm not the best and I do break rules here n there but I know I'm wrong, I'm least admitting it and know I need to improve. Additional Details Sorry Rodknocker:
what I meant was it sometimes annoys me if it directly involves me in the bad driving like they're tailgating me or anything else that I feel intimidated by. but if its just genreally someone shooting pass at speed or being a ********, once they're pass me I don't let it bother me like for the rest of my journey, just think ye let them keep on driving like an idiot till tehy crash then realise what a pafetic t*** he/she is being

BEST - Consideration for fellow users of the road. I give other drivers every consideration possible and I do not (have never) practised road rage. As a result I have never had an 'at fault' driving incident. (45 years clean record) and I pay obscenely low insurance premiums.
In most respects I consider myself to be slightly better attuned to the road than the average motorist. Not a better driver; just more aware. I maintain my vehicle religiously and upgrade my driving skills through defencive driving, skid and race schools. And I don't even own a GD cell phone.
WORST - I speed. I live to drive fast. The more challenging the road, the faster I am likely to drive. I do not speed in traffic or put other drivers at risk. Most of my driving is done on sparsely travelled highways and gravelled 'grid' roads. On the highway my average speed is in the vicinity of 80-85 MPH. On 'grid' roads my speeds are whatever the surface conditions will allow without flipping into a grain field. Suffice it to say that it's on the high side of 85 MPH. My car is slightly 'modified' to sustain these speeds and to handle better.
I have found that as I age (not gracefully) that my speeds have diminished somewhat over the years. I used to drive much faster (worse). It's all a matter of perspective. |

You said
GOOD not letting bad drivers get over me,
BAD gets easily intimidated by bad drivers annoying me
So your good and bad are the same
My bad habits are talking on my cell phone while driving, splitting lanes (it is legal in CA) when riding my Harley and intolerance for idiots who do not use blinkers and always cut me off So I smoke them out (black thick diesel smoke). I really like it when their windows are down. I also hate people who can not merge properly
Good habits are I always use a blinker, I try not to tailgate and I am always scanning the road for idiots, accidents and cops. |

Good: Learning to have patient and avoid taking chances, signals turns, checks mirrors often, checks blind spot before changing lanes, and it doesn't bother me and I don't drive differently (I don't brake check someone) when I'm tailgated.
Bad: tailgating when in a hurry, speeding up to make yellow lights, speeding (but not excessive), not signaling lane changes, talking on cell phone while driving, getting mad at other drivers or having road rage, driving aggressively (but I try to avoid that now), and I have passed on a double solid yellow line before, but not anymore. All of this and I've never had an accident. |

Good: Check my mirrors, always use my turn signals, make sure I have enough room before switching lanes because I hate to cut people off, I don't tailgate, and I never turn on red when there's a "No Turn on Red" sign!! =)
Bad: I send texts while Im actually driving, I speed, I become aggravated very easily, my turns are extremely sharp |

My bad driving habit is driving with one hand on the wheel. |

GOOD: leaving enough space between me and the vehicle in front. This gives better vision and allows better planning for overtaking and for safety.
BAD: Difficult, and varies from day to day - but I do try to reflect on, and analyse, my driving. Sometimes, I'm impatient - but I still try to leave that gap.
Advice - read / re-read "Roadcraft" - the police manual (get it from Amazon). |

Good Points: Paying attention to traffic, always leave space when needed
Bad Points: Speeding on the interstate, impatient, easily aggravated with stupid drivers |

my best driving habit is my ability to watch and see the whole field for 6 or more car lengths around me. i am rarely surprised by sudden stops or speed traps. I avoid driving with the pact.
my worst is a very common problem. I get in a "comfort zone" while near my home. And statistics state most accidents happen within 5 miles of ones home. |

I have a massive fear of being in a car accident or hurting somebody else. I couldn't live with that so that makes me a pretty good driver, I check my mirrors, check blind spots, I drive at the right speed (most of the time) and I make sure I indicate at turnings and round-a-bouts, etc.
I try to do everything right and put all my concentration in driving. A car is a death weapon. |
