i was told my sons car seat had went out of date 9 yaers ago how do i find out if this is true or not

Yes, they are mostly made of plastic. If you know much about plastic the simple fact is that it breaks down over time. It is actually different strains put together, so like anything else those strains will eventually break apart to go back to their normal state. Just like food will expire because it separates in a sense. I also agree that the changing safety standards and even safety designs in the seats if you go by a longer period of time. Just remember that just because the plastic is still holding together and LOOKS fine doesn't mean it isn't in a weakened state. To the one who didn't grasp it this is about car seats that are used for babies and kids, not the ones built in to the car. |

Most manufacturers put a limit of 6 years on their car seats, so yes its time to replace it. |

To answer your question, yes, most child seats have a date on them, and 5 years after that date it's recommended you replace them. |
