Sensors tell the car which airbags to deploy in an accident in order to protect the occupants. If you are rear-ended, there is no need for an airbag to go off. The reasons for this selective air bag deployment is economic. Air bags are expensive. Costs to repair cars, after an accident, are very high. If a car is expensive to fix, then it's insurance will be higher. If it's insurance rates are higher, then less cars of that type will be sold. And that is bad for the car manufacturer. So car manufacturers try to figure out, and program into the car what forces would be dealt with in what way. (In other words, which air bag to set off, and what air bags to not set off for any given scenario). Perhaps you know that many pick-up trucks today have a front seat sensor that tells the vehicles' computer if there is a front seat passenger. If there is a passenger, and a frontal collision, then the passenger airbag would be deployed. If there is no front seat passenger, then why waste the airbag for upwards of $1000? This sensor created a problem though with child safety seats. This is why these vehicles have a key lock to turn of that vehicles' airbag in the front passenger seat. |

Ric F is close, but wrong. The reason for selective airbag deployment is not economic. The reason is that any unnecessary airbag deployment can cause injury (even to someone who would not have been injured otherwise). Having all the airbags deploy when only some are needed would be dangerous, and possibly illegal. The vehicle must be designed so that only the airbags needed to prevent injury deploy, to minimize the risk of one of the other ones causing an injury. |
