I'm looking to get 4pt harnesses for my 1998 dodge neon and everyone I've talked to has told me to get a harness bar. But I don't want to remove my backseat to get the bar. Do I technically need to remove the backseat to install the harness bar or can I keep the backseat in and still install the bar?

Make sure the belts are as close to 90 degrees as possible. It doesn't matter how far back they are really. Typically a 3" Harness will stretch one inch per foot in a 60 G impact crash. You want them to stretch a little so you don't brake bones or you guts smash against the inside of you rib cage. It was trendy in the 80's for rally cars to put their belts all the way to the rear strut towers. It's still trendy in South American countries running rallies. I'm not sayin you should do that but you don't need to put the belts right behind the seat. If you purchase your harness with bolt mounts, then run the should harnesses to the rear dash. Plate them and mount them back there. Sometimes there is a re enforced child seat mount on the rear dash that makes and ideal place to mount a harness. A 3pt harness will provide you with more Mounting options. What ever you do DO NOT MOUNT TO THE FLOOR OR REAR WASTE BELT MOUNTING POINTS! You'll run the risk of serious injury. Like compressed vertebrae. A single should strap found stock allows the person to rotate around the belt and de-energize. You give that up with a 4pt harness. |

It will all depend on the size and the mounting points of the bar, take some measurements of several bars and see if one will fit correctly but I would say that for the greatest protection the seat will need to be removed. |
