red light cameras and hgv's?
Find answers to your legal question.

red light cameras and hgv's?

red light cameras are usually triggered by sensors in the ground so i was wondering what happens if the rear of a hgv passes over this sensor whilst the light is on red.

there is every chance that the light would have been on green as the driver passes through the light but due to the vehicle length the light could easily change to red in the time it would take the vehicle to fully cross the lights, especially if the vehicle needed to make a slow turn immediately after the lights.

ok, if you are driving in a built up area & in heavy traffic a HGV may only be travelling quite slowly through the lights where a 'red light camera' is in place... the detectors are cut into the road just before & after the Stop Line, so it is possible that a HGV that has committed to the junction on a Green light and the signal changes whilst the HGV is still passing over the UVD (Underground Vehicle Detector) then the camera 'might' be triggered as the rear of the trailer passes over the UVD...

I work in a Transport Office and I get many of the 'queries' on my desk and none of the drivers get a NIP (Notice of Intended Prosecution) as they also detect the speed of the HGV & the authorities can make judgement on the evidence before they process any NIP's...

in response to 'gojuryu'... the length of the average tri-axel trailer is 45 feet, plus tractor unit, so that makes the total length of between 54 & 55ft (depending on where the driver has set his 5th wheel)

No the red light triggers whether they be over head or under they are placed at the actual STOP LINE, and only become triggered or set if the light is already red.
therefore driving through a green, hitting a yellow then having a red half way through wont snap a photo of you.

at 30 MPH a waggon is covering 44ft per second. A traffic light changes from green to amber, stays on amber for 3 to 5 seconds, then goes to red.
The long Artic's are about 40 ft long, so, in (average) 4 seconds it will have travelled some 150 ft.
So even if it goes through as it changes to amber it should be well through as it changes to red, certainly past the stop line sensor.
