UK law states a child may not sit in the front passenger seat until they have reached either the age of 12 or 135cm (4ft 4") in height.

Andy hasn't got it quite right - the link he gave states that a child up to 12 must use an appropriate seat or restraint when using the front seat. In other words, under 12 they 'can' use the front seat provided they use the right gear! If an appropriate restraint isn't fitted to the car, the child must sit in the rear seat. |

Just looked it up there is no age limit as long as the child is properly restraint. Anyone under 12 or under135cm must be in a car seat.
Only rear facing child seat is Illegal which is used for baby's.
Also it is the drivers responsibility to assure that anyone under 14 is wearing there seat belt
