when you see the height signs on overheads on the highway they are to tell trucks if they will fit.?

Overhead structures over freeways are typically designed so that they have a minimum clearance of around 15 feet over the traveled way. Such structures will not have signs on them that identify the clearance below them; rather, it is the structures with reduced overhead clearances that will have signs that identify the height of the reduced overhead clearance. Nearly all "high load hits" on overhead structures are caused by the load on the trailer, not by the truck/tractor itself.

In the event that an oversized truck on the highway comes to a structure that is too low to safely pass beneath it, the only recourse is to pull over and wait for assistance from local law enforcement. Most likely, law enforcement personnel will have to provide traffic controls so that the truck can safely back up to a point where it can exit the highway and take another route.

Trucks with loads that exceed a certain height will usually be required to obtain a special load permit that identifies the exact route (with respect to the freeway system) that the truck must take to reach its destination.

If a truck gets to a too short overpass, a lot depends on the difference in heights. If it's a matter of an inch or so, a heavily laden truck might make it under, or deflating the tires a bit might allow the truck to pass under. Any more than that and the truck will have to back up until it's able to leave the highway. As truckers usually have fair warning about low clearances (you may not notice the signs, but they should), they will usually earn themselves a ticket/fine for their troubles.

yes the signs are for trucks, trucks in the US are allowed to be about 15 feet tall,if the truck is any taller they have to get special permits and a route is planed so the truck want get stuck.In the event a truck cant fit at an overpass the authority's will block the road so the truck can turn around and expensive fines will be issued to the driver and freight company ..

I have an uncle that was in this situation before. He actually drove right through it one time and took the top of his truck off, but apparently they now have a GPS that tells them where they can and can't go. Otherwise i would assume they just turn around.
