A Birthday Wish For My Mom... what resources are available to help me on this journey? ?

My mom will be 44 September 22nd... She was adopted out of Spokane, WA when she was only 3 days old, and taken to Anchorage, AK where she grew up with parents and a brother who loved her. Both her parents died over 15 years ago, and now that she has no family (except us kids) she seems more depressed. She has been searching unsuccesfully for 30 years trying to find her biological parents. All I know is her dad was a college proffesor who had an affair with a young woman who was about 18 years old.
Is there any resources out there for those who seem to have lost hope that they will ever know who their birth parents are? Is there a way to get around a "Closed Adoption"? I would give anything to help my mom find her parents.
I would love to hire a PI but I don't know if I could afford one. In all honesty, do you think that my mom's birth parents will want to see her after 44 years? I just want to help my mom....
Please, if you have any advice I would be eternally thankful!

If the adoption finalized in Alaska, then the original birth certificate is available to her. If it finalized in Washington, there is a confidential intermediary system in that state to help facilitate reunion.
Also, she can get her non-identifying information (non-id) which can provide good clues, including first names.

Also, if she hasn't registered with the International Soundex Reunion Registry yet, she should do so. It is the largest reunion registry in the world.
