A Question about the CHildren with Nazi Names?
|
THe story is big in the news about three children being removed by Social services. I tend to think there's some deeper reason for the children being removed, beyond just the Nazi names the children were given.
My question is this.. IF there is a legitimate reason for the children being removed, and they are put into the system,
DO you think in THIS case APs would be justified in changing the children's names?
The Children's names are Adolf Hitler Campbell.. That name would potentially completely be changed
The two younger are JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell.. THe Middle part could just be dropped from her legal name, and she could still be JoyceLynn..
The youngest is Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell. I know that name has Nazi background as well, but I'm not sure if the FULL name is one of Hitler's right hand people's names.. Possibly Jeannie can be kept.
What do you think? IF these children are adopted, would their APs be justified in changing their names, at least somewhat.. and completely obliterating the Nazi part of the name?
These children have been removed from their parents by Social Services. I like to think there's a legitimate reason. I'm willing to be the parents are serious Neo Nazis, and maybe they're involved in some illegal things... Additional Details that's "willing to BET the parents are serious neo Nazis"

To be blunt, yes. Name changing is appropriate when there's a safety issue, and this is one, even if it's not directly from the biological parents.
Having names like this will leave the children vulnerable to pressure, potential recruitment, and possibly even being considered a "traitor" by Neo-Nazi groups. It also leaves them potentially open to violence or abuse by people on the other side who assume their names mean they're racists.
Plus honestly, it degrades them. It makes school or job advancement pretty much impossible. Outside of a Neo-Nazi enclave, these children frankly have no hope of a normal and productive life, or of being perceived based on their value as human beings rather than their names. These names just don't work in the real world.
I also think it's pretty unfair to leave a child branded "racist" from birth. I think it would be a major handicap in teaching about acceptance and diversity. It's labeling at its worst.
I'm all for keeping the original names of adopted children when possible. But names like "Adolf Hitler" and "Aryan Nation" go way beyond possible.
Names should not be kept when they will actually HARM children. Keeping the name is for the child's benefit, not just the principle of the thing. Being named a Neo-Nazi slogan doesn't benefit the child.
In this case, the child's needs indicate a name change... even though that situation is quite rare. |

The Nazi enthusiast thing had occurred to me as well. I have to say it would be in the best interest of the boy child to eliminate most of his name. the girls you could get away with modifications, but I have no idea why a person would want their son to go through the pains of life with that name. |

In this case I would have to say that I would advocate dropping the "Nazi-ish" parts of their names but I would encourage the "normal" names to be kept. A name should never prevent a child from having fair treatment or place a child at risk as these names clearly do.

Yes....those names will cause harm emotionally and potentially physically to say the least.
Names that are not really names to begin will should be changed like Violence..Bus Stop Number 9....or Tula does the Hula in Hawaii. Those names? are setting children up for harassment and discrimination. |

There is always more to child protection issues than just what is published in the news.
One report I just saw indicated that the parents were extremely immature and that their immature behavior put the children 'at risk'.
Though the article didn't go further, I would surmise that the poor choice of names was simply the next rung on a ladder of poor choices that made life hard for these three children.
Frankly, they should be given COMPLETELY new names so that they can have a fresh adjustment with a family who truly love them and will put their needs of safety and comfort as a paramount concern. |

I've always said that unless there is a compelling issue to change an adopted child's given name, the APs should leave it alone.
I agree with you. This is a pretty compelling reason. |

This is one of the few cases where I would say its in the child's best interests and the parents are nuts to say the Holocaust didn't happen...(Sounds like they need to get out a bit more and look at the historical evidence...) Those are parents who also live in fairyland and denial...(Good to see its not just PAP's and AP's)
That said, were kids being abused or neglected in any way other than being given dodgy names would cause them to be singled out or become targets in society.
There is also no indications in any article I've read about this that these kids will automatically be adopted by another family. (Likely they will at least end up in foster care until all of this sorted out.) |

I think it would depend on the ages of the children. They could go by middle names (if more appropriate) or a nickname. I wasn't aware that they had since been removed ... while it's a shame, there's probably reason for it. On the other hand, even if people name their children after history's biggest sickos, what can you do - I would hate to think their children were taken away on that basis only and not because there was legitimate abuse going on. Poor judgment, yes - but doesn't mean they've been abused necessarily. I'll have to google this story and read up more since I haven't heard anything since the dreaded cake incident.
Honestly, though, I have trouble believing someone who says they're not racist when they name their kid 'Aryan nation.' |

What makes you think these children are going to be ADOPTED?? They were removed by the state to try and prove that the parents are unfit because they are placing their children in harm's way by giving them controversial names. The worst that will happen is that the parents will be ordered to rename the children. There is no mention of any other harm these children might be in. I will guarantee you that the kids will be returned to their parents in due time. Chances are that there is no legal way for the state to force the parents to rename the children, anyways. Unfortunately, this is America, land of the free, and you have to live with the good and the bad in order to retain that title. I don't have to like it, and you don't have to like it, it just is.
But unless the parents are proven unfit, these children will never be adopted out to another family. |

If adoptive parents are normally allowed to change a child's name, I think they have even more reason to in this case! |
