This topic truly angers me! This woman from my church could not conceive, so her and her husband decided to adopt the most adorable little Ethiopian girl. I love this couple and their little girl so much, it is amazing to see what they have done; they have taken her from a miserable life and have given her more than she could ever imagine or even appreciate right now (she is now a little over a year old).

People are always going to talk and be rude and nosy, a lot of people talk bad about them because they are white and the little girl is extremely dark!

My step mother is also black, I am pregnant, and she tells people that my baby is her grand-baby. People think she is my boyfriend's mom (they are white too) and when she tries to explain that she's my step mother, she is viewed differently. It doesn't bother her but it really makes me mad.

I think it's stupid, skin color doesn't affect who I love. Even though I'm having my own baby now, one day I want to adopt too, from somewhere overseas, whether it's China or Ethiopia. What you're doing is awesome, don't let some rude people get in the way of building your family! :)

-edit-
You people who are emailing me are absolutely stupid. I "obviously" don't live in the south? I live in Tennessee. I guess that's not southern enough for you. It's not black people I worry about, it's the small percentage of you ignorant whites that make me embarrassed to be white in the "south." And last time I checked, Tennessee also joined the Confederacy, did it not? That would be SOUTH.

I don't see any problem in it. I can see why it would rise questions in the south but not the north or other places. I know some black families that HATE white people for really no reason what so ever. They go off about slavery and other crap like that but honestly they are not the only races enslaved. Plus it never happened to them personally. They for some reason just cling to their roots or whatever. So I would probably question why some of the black couples want to adopt a white kid around here but if you told me that some black couple from NY wanted to adopt then I would not question it. My questions here would be based off of what I have experienced and seen. For example there was this poor old white man walking his dog the other day and these black teens come up and throw eggs and sugar on him. I had to stop my car and run them off with my baseball bat I carry in the car.

Until I read some of these answers I would have said that I've never heard of anyone having an issue with black people adopting a white child. I live in the Northeast if that makes any difference.

The only exception is that I would feel a little uncomfortable with any couple that tells me they're looking to adopt from a specific ethnicity. If someone said they wanted a little Asian girl who would look like a China doll or an Irish girl because they love step dancing or a child from Mexico because they love Mexican food, those things would trouble me. Then I'd feel like the child that was being adopted would have a stereotypical role to fulfill, and no children - adopted or not - should have that laid on them.

"...why questions comes up when a black couple wants to adopt a white child"

In the US there are more black children available for adoption than white children.

As a general rule it is considered preferable for children to be adopted within their own culture so that they may learn about and be a part of that culture as they grow.

For every white child available for adoption there are usually plenty of white families that would be able to adopt that child so there would be no need for a white child to be adopted into a black family.

The same questions are often asked about black children going into white families but there are usually more black children available for adoption than black families who are wanting to adopt so (rightly or wrongly) many black children end up being adopted by white families.

In certain places I'd question it. Where I live i would defiantly question it. Black still kill whites for no reason where i live because of their hatred for them. I would actually be scared to death for that poor baby. But if it was else where i would not be as concerned. I've been to Oregon and they are decent people there.
