in US domestic adoption do both parents need to be citizens? my husband will have his green card, but not be a citizen for about 3 more years (he's Welsh). And internationally is there a minimal age for adopting out of Russia? Which would you suggest? International or Domestic? Any answers will be appreciated just please do not rant about how we should "take care of our own people first". Please? I don't need to hear that, keep it to yourself.

If you absolutely feel you MUST adopt... then either foster care or domestic.
And if you end up planning to do international, please please PLEASE consider the following for your would-be child:
- language classes (prepare to teach your child some basic words/sentences in their would-have-been native tongue)
- cultural events (learn about the traditions and try to integrate those)
- that they WILL ask you about why they were adopted, and that saying "she loved you so much she gave you up" is NOT going to be comprehensible to a child's heart
Oh to heck with it, just go read a blog that I wrote, it explains many of the issues in international adoption once the child is old enough to understand what adoption really means - beyond the win-win image.

Check with your state guidelines for adoption. Adoption laws vary by state.
International adoption laws are set by countries and countries set age limitations, marriage, and sometimes health requirements.
I am adopted and we just adopted our first child. I disagree with the naysayers that have unresolved issues with their past. Don't let them discourage you.
I have worked in foster care and I am a counselor now. Kids need love and that is the bottom line. Of course there are ways that are better than others to show it, but really there are kids all over the world (including here in the US) that just need love.
I am transracially adopted and that is an additional variable because many will impose their views about culture, language, traditions, etc. You must be able to instill confidence and encourage your child with love. (Thankfully my parents did this and I am able to see how fortunate I am as their child and how lucky I am to have our daughter). Keep in mind, a natural parent isn't necessarily any more natural at parenting than you will be.
Go with your gut so you won't regret anything. And once you get a child, love them with all your heart. I have always believed that adopted or biological, my soul was meant to be my mother's child. And our daughter was born looking like me and I believe that she was meant to be mine no matter how she came to us. |
