It more the norm than a rarity. This wasn't the first mother to find her kidnapped child but one of the first that went to the foreign media with it. Many mothers fear the gov't and the people running the racket.

The baby trafficking has been going on for years and yes, many paps were aware of it but they choose to look at it isolated events. Read the other articles where this mother talks about her thoughts on the paps that were flocking there and had conversations with. It would disgust anyone with a conscience.

I do not have sympathy for people blinded by their desperation and self interest to get their hands on baby they can't give birth to themselves. I say they are partially to blame by driving up the demand.

There are thousands of Guatemalan children living in the US and Canada that were not relinquished from their natural parents.

No amt. of love an Ap gives to those children will make up for the pain those children will feel when they discover the truth and their Ap's part in it.

This is why I hate people wanting quick and easy.

If it's quick and easy, that's where they come from.

It's never about the children, no-one asked and no-one cared.

I think it's sickening and terrifying. I'm glad Guatemala has frozen adoptions and I'm even more glad that that little girl was found and returned to her parents.

I'm so glad this mother found her child. It is tragic to have been separated for months, and there are lots of cases of baby stealing in Guatemala undiscovered. Tragic.

Completely disgusting what is happening to these mothers and children. Even though she found her daughter, she lost over a year with her. Who knows what lasting effects this will have on both of them.

I am glad they have suspended adoptions. But things like this make me loose a little more faith in the human race ever day.

I think most people would think its disgusting. Me included...( Not just Adoptive Parents.)

Well just hope that US government is investigating it in detail whats going on and examine the agreements with the country on adoption practice's being conducted there by the local orphanages.

If its found to be like some countries (Romania) that have had corrupt practices then a ban should be put in place to prevent couples from adopting children from that country. Other countries have done that when corruption has been found in human trafficking.

(I don't know where the US stands on Guatemala in relation to people being allowed to adopt from there.)

Thanks for posting this. I am not against adoption as I have said many times. I am against this. This is not adoption, it's human trafficking. I understand the urge to have a child, but is it worth doing this to someone else?

We need to get on the same page, which seems impossible at times but it's the only way change is going to happen.

Imagine being that woman, being shoved in a closet and when you get out your child is gone. You don't have to be a natural parent to feel that one. this is wrong.

I have heard the stories about the children who will die if they are not rescued. I am not disagreeing with the fact that those children exist. I am asking why if those children exist is this going on? Why are these children being abducted and sold for enough to keep two generations alive and well in some of these countries? Because people are willing to pay the price, that's why. If no one were willing to pay the outrageous prices for these children I honestly believe this would all but stop and adoption would go back to finding homes for children who really, actually need a home.

I am very glad that this mother was able to find and reunite with her child. I think it just reaffirms that there were very good reasons for
guatemalan adoptions to be put on hold, and that a lot of reforms need to be made, and the system completely changed before adoptions from guatemala can be allowed again.

tish
but, aren't ALL of these IA because some poor inept woman dumped them off at the orphanage?

wow...just wow.

What a terrifying and horrible experience for everyone involved! I'm not an AP-I'm an adoptee and bmom but I can sympathize with everyone except the governments involved with stealing this beautiful child from her family!
What a horrible, horrible mess.

I think if you're going to adopt internationally, you have the responsibility to do everything you can to be sure your adoption is ethical. You have to research your agency and the program of the country you're adopting from. When you know what kinds of things may happen you have to figure out how to guard against it. DNA tests are great, provided you can be sure they are taken under supervision and there's no chance of fraud. I definitely think it's 100% right for the US government to shut down programs from countries that tolerate corruption. I just wish they would do it sooner than they have in some places.

We chose to adopt from a country where we could meet the remaining family face to face. We adopted four older siblings so that we could hear the story from them and know that it matches what we were told, and that they could identify the family members we met. We told our agency that we would publicize it if our children told us something different than the paperwork said. We set up a way to stay in touch with the family, which also meant providing financial support. (They won't use the money to send pictures if they don't have the money for food). It's more complicated than just "going there and getting a baby, my agency is great."

Gaia Raain
Huh. You mean they actually FAKED the DNA tests? Interesting. I know of at least one AP who might be devastated by this news.
