Hey,
I am a fellow Adoptee but never experienced foster home life. I am currently writing a paper of the "Effects of Adoption on Education". I have developed a series of questions but there is no reason to stick to them, they are merely a guide. Would you mind giving me your answers so that I can have a well rounded piece? Anything is fine even if brief:
Adopted Age?
Number of Foster families lived with?
How well did you do in school through each phase? (Grade school, elementary, junior, high school).
How did you view your experiences when you were younger? Negative/ Positive (ie depressed all the time would be considered negative)
How do you view them now looking back? (Negative/ Positive)
**IMPORTANT** Did you have trouble fitting in socially? (ie anxious, tough making strong friendships...)
Did you perform any challenging behaviors in school? (ie disruptive behavior, panic, rage, afraid to fail...)
Do you have specific examples that you have recognized in which Adoption effected your education?
Does it still effect you today? (in general not just pertaining to education)
What would you say is the greatest challenge you faced in school?
Did you attend higher education? (ie college or university) if so, what have you optained? (BS, AA, MS, PhD)
**IMPORTANT** Anything else you feel as important??

I don't know if it counts, but I was adopted by a pack of wolves when I was 3 after I got lost in the woods. I lived with them for 5 years and learned how to live off the land, until I was abducted by an alien race and taken to their home planet where I learned the language and also english which they have adopted as their second language. School there is much different, you pick the material you want to master and the teacher comes over and scans the information into your head, and then you have a discussion afterward. So, I guess since I was adopted by aliens with superior technology the effect of adoption has been very positive for my education. I earned an equivalent of 6 to 7 doctorates in only a few months. |

Adopted Age? 9 years
Number of Foster families lived with? 3, but most of the time I was with the same family
How well did you do in school through each phase? (Grade school, elementary, junior, high school). Up through about 7th grade, I was an excellent student. As I began to get older, I began to rebel more, and my grades slipped quite quickly.
How did you view your experiences when you were younger? Negative/ Positive (ie depressed all the time would be considered negative) There were both negatives and positives, of course. However, the negatives were wow! negative! I was more or less going back and forth between a wonderful family (adoptive) and a horrible one, which was detrimental on a young child. It caused many me many mental issues that were difficult to deal with.
How do you view them now looking back? (Negative/ Positive) I view them more or less the same. The only difference now is that as an adult, I am more able to understand the things that were happening. In some ways, I am even angrier now than I was then, and in other ways, I regret decisions I made at the time.
**IMPORTANT** Did you have trouble fitting in socially? (ie anxious, tough making strong friendships...) I was never the popular cheerleader (lol) but I was able to form a few lifelong friendships. As an adult, I tend to have a lot of trouble.more than I did when I had that innocent childness!
Did you perform any challenging behaviors in school? (ie disruptive behavior, panic, rage, afraid to fail...) My challenges were more centered at home.
Do you have specific examples that you have recognized in which Adoption effected your education? Absolutely. My brother and I were both adopted, my sisters (adoptive) are their naural children. The two of us barely graduated high school, whereas they went on to become a veteranarian(sp) and an RN. This was not due to lack of intelligence, more due to the behavioral problems.
Does it still effect you today? (in general not just pertaining to education) Everyday of my life.
What would you say is the greatest challenge you faced in school? I think the same challenges that everyone faces!
Did you attend higher education? (ie college or university) if so, what have you optained? (BS, AA, MS, PhD) I attempted to go to college, but quit after a year because it was difficult with my children.
**IMPORTANT** Anything else you feel as important?? |

Adopted Age?3 years, but lived with the family starting at 8 months old.
Number of Foster families lived with?none.
How well did you do in school through each phase? (Grade school, elementary, junior, high school).Elemtary school and middle school were fine, high school ws rocky, i graduated 3 years late, due to my ADD .
How did you view your experiences when you were younger? Negative/ Positive (ie depressed all the time would be considered negative) I had a normal childhood.i never felt depressed til i became a teenager and failed 9th grade.
How do you view them now looking back? (Negative/ Positive)They were normal childhood experiences.
**IMPORTANT** Did you have trouble fitting in socially? (ie anxious, tough making strong friendships...) actually no i didn't. i made friends very easily, i was shy a little bit, but after i got to know someone, it was good!
Did you perform any challenging behaviors in school? (ie disruptive behavior, panic, rage, afraid to fail...)i have ADD. i was never as bad as my brother though. we were diagnosed at age 5, before we were told we were adopted
Do you have specific examples that you have recognized in which Adoption effected your education?no. Me having ADD had nothing to do with my adoption, i was born that way. I blame my educational failures on myself. If i had applied myself, i could have graduated on time, but i refused.
Does it still effect you today? (in general not just pertaining to education)I'm not sure what you mean.
What would you say is the greatest challenge you faced in school?Getting decent grades in high school. Until then, my experiences were pretty run of the mill.
Did you attend higher education? (ie college or university) if so, what have you optained? (BS, AA, MS, PhD)no.
**IMPORTANT** Anything else you feel as important??nope. |

Hi,,,I am not adopted but I have a twist for you,,I am birthmother who had a daughter when I was age 16 and was unwed in 1978, She will be 30 years old this Nov and I have been searching for her for years to no avail. So if I answer your questions as they pertained to me back in 1978 when I was dropped off in city in another state all alone to deal with it ( as was put to me) the pregnancy,
question 1 she was a new born at birth- I was 16
question 2 her none it was a private adoprion- me 2 as I was preganat
question 3 her I am searching for her as I have for years and I am hopefull she did well, smile,,Me I got a GED and was shunned
question 4....her I am hopefull.me positive to neitive
question 5... her again I hope positive,,,,,me mixed
question 6,,,her as always I hope pray all possitive,me yes I was considered a bad girl( rather I was or not,)
question 7, her ,,,,I hopr not,,me yes because I was considered one of those girls ( no matter the truth of the issue)
question 8,, hers I pray not,,me yes I had to drop out of high school and I worked hard to get my GED and since then I have struggled but I have some college.
question 9.. her,I hope she has her master's degree,,,,,me yes you know the economy
Question 10..her none I hope and pray,me being considered trash and a bad girl ( again no mater how much truth there is to that or not)
question 11....her as I said I am so hopefull,,,me none ,,,,,just enough to be a banck teller and computor operator..
I hope this did not upset you that I answered your questions I just want you to know that having to put a child up for adoption is the hardest painfullest thing a woman ( or teenager as I was) ever had to do.I am now in my mid 40's and I have been searching for my birth daughter for years and years and years and the pain is still as fresh in me today as it was back in 1978 when I had to relinquish her,,Just a differnt view,,Thank you |

How well did you do in school through each phase? (Grade school, elementary, junior, high school). Did very well mostly, struggled slightly in grade school due to illness. HIgh school graduated with honors.
How did you view your experiences when you were younger? Negative/ Positive (ie depressed all the time would be considered negative) I was a thoughful quiet child, but mostly positive. I think I was mainly a 'thinker' more than a doer, and I used to analyze a lot of things in my life. I've not suffered from depression except for a brief bout recently due to my experiences as a foster parent.
How do you view them now looking back? (Negative/ Positive) Mostly positive to be honest. I had a wonderful (adoptive) family, and my mother was extremely pro-active in helping me search for my birthmother. She actually instegated my search and was supportive of my feelings all the way through. I didn't have contact with my birthfamily throughout my childhood as I was so seriously abused as an infant but my parents never spoke negatively about my birthparents they just told me the truth.
**IMPORTANT** Did you have trouble fitting in socially? (ie anxious, tough making strong friendships...) Not really, I was always someone quiet but I had friends rather than aquaintances, and I've made lifelong friendships that I still cherish. I am somewhat different to my adoptive family but I was always loved and appreciated for who I was, I wasn't treated badly for being different.
Did you perform any challenging behaviors in school? (ie disruptive behavior, panic, rage, afraid to fail...) No. I was a 'usual' teenager, but nothing much else.
Do you have specific examples that you have recognized in which Adoption effected your education? No, I don't feel adoption had an impact on my education at all.
Does it still effect you today? (in general not just pertaining to education) Only in that I struggle with my feelings of guilt as my birthmother wants us to have a stronger relationship than we do and I still can't bring myself to think of her as my mother. She pressures me to do this but I just can't.
What would you say is the greatest challenge you faced in school? Keeping up with my grades when I fell ill and missed a lot of school.
Did you attend higher education? (ie college or university) if so, what have you optained? (BS, AA, MS, PhD)
I have a BS and MS in Sociology.

Did you perform any challenging behaviors in school? (ie disruptive behavior, panic, rage, afraid to fail...) I DID SPORTS TO GET AWAY FROM FAMILY
Do you have specific examples that you have recognized in which Adoption effected your education? WHEN YOU FIND OUT YOU'RE ADOPTED EVERYTHING CHANGES..
Does it still effect you today? (in general not just pertaining to education) YES...STILL UPSETS ME NOT MEETING MY REAL MOM..BUT IF I WASNT ADOPTED AND PUT INTO A FOSTER HOME AFTERWARD I WOULDNT HAVE EVER MET THE LOVE OF MY LIFE THAT IM WITH NOW
What would you say is the greatest challenge you faced in school? MAKING FRIENDS AND BEING WANTED
Did you attend higher education? (ie college or university) if so, what have you optained? (BS, AA, MS, PhD) I WENT TO COLLEGE FOR A YEAR AND FAILED OUT

I think this paper would be much better comparing the experiences of those adopted to those that stayed in foster care.......
It would be interesting to look at the outcomes and see if those that were adopted had better outcomes than those that stayed in foster care.
If you want answers from foster kids, say, so.....cause several of us were never adopted. |
