About Adoption? Serious thinking about it next year. Wanting some advice?

I am unable to have children and i am still in school (i am 21) I was considering adoption. I am single and not married. I was wondering about adopting as a single mother. I want to adopt a little girl roughly when i get out of college. I was thinking about adopting a child at the age 22 an infant. What are the PROS and CONS of adopting? What will my chances be getting a daughter? How long do you estimate it will take?

Thanks,

Lara
Adopting a child on your own could take up to a few years. File your papers in as soon as possible so that by the time you are done school you don't have to wait as much. Adopting is something amazing I think, giving children a second chance to a better family is probably the best thing anyone could ask for. Make sure you don't have any criminal records either. Every time I look at child that's been adopted I think how lucky those children are!

THANKS FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

Adoption at that age, and of that age, will be very difficult for you I think. One of the things they look at when screening prospective adoptive parents is that they are secure in their lives which includes career and residence. If you are just starting on a career then the first question they will ask is "how can you work to support a child of this age while still providing him/her with the care and attention they will need?" Day care will not be looked upon favourably, neither will having him/her cared for by relatives while you work.

I'm not saying that they won't allow it or would reject your application but I think you would have some major hurdles to get over first.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters. The Peace Corps. Be a nanny in NYC. Look into these options.

First be sure to get a second and third opinion to know for sure you are unable to have children. Doctors do make mistakes.

I think you should wait until you are working and have established yourself before you adopt, possibly even consider getting married first, a man who loves you will understand your inability to have children.

The most important thing about adoption is being honest with the child as they grow up about their biological family. Lies and deceit will hurt all of you and could cause irreparable damage to your relationship.

There are many many resources on the web and in the library about adoption that can give you the answers you are looking for when you are really ready to start an adoption procedure - as there are many types of adoption. Plus you will want to consult with an attorney to ensure your rights are protected as well as that of the child and birth parents.

Infants are the ones who are guaranteed home unless they are special needs. So unless you want to adopt overseas it would be very difficult. Even though I'm sure you'll be a great mommy, if they find someone who has had a stable job for many years and is doing good financially they'd most likely pick them.

Also through some adoption places you have to have requirements like being married or at least 35. I know that overseas in Kazakhstan you can adopt an infant if you're 18 and meet other requirements. :p So it's very possible to do that.

First I am adopted and I don't like it. I love my family and wouldn't trade them for anything in the world. I don't recommend it. The reason that I don't is because I wonder 24/7 about who I am and I don't want to any other child to go through it. I would not even wish it on my worst enemy. It is very hard to deal with being adopted especially going to school and seeing everyone with their biological mom and dad and me not having a biological mom and dad. I am asian and they are white, and I think that that is why I kinda feel like that. Another thing was that I was adopted out of the country and also it was a closed one. I just hope that if you do adopt I it is an open adoption and not a closed one!

P.S. I hope you really thing about what you want before you do it because once you have done it there is no going back.
