Please keep in mind that in order to be adopted, a child must first suffer a very tremendous and painful loss. Society seems to overlook the fact that this has happened, and instead expects us to feel grateful for losing our mothers, our families, and in some cases, our entire cultures, language, and heritage.

If you plan to adopt someday, please look into the foster care system where thousands of children are already free for adoption. But remember, any adoption comes with many struggles, many painful issues, most stemming from being either given away intentionally or being separated through abusive situations...either way, adoption for an adoptee may not always be the "amazing" thing you feel that it is.

Please do some reading on the issues that adopted children face. Attachment, trust, abandonment fears, these are just the tip of the iceberg. I won't even get into the whole sealed records debacle...hopefully, by the time you adopt, the government will come into the 21st century and at least give adoptees their own birth certificates.

How it works depends upon what avenue you choose to adopt through.

If you go with an actual adoption agency you will have to meet with them, fill out all of the paperwork and have a home study done by one of their social workers. There will also be background checks, criminal records checks and perhaps even credit checks. Once you go through that whole process they will decide if you are suitable to adopt and if so your name will be placed on a waiting list till a child comes available that is a suitable match for you and your family. The whole cost for this varies by agency and State/Province and can range from $15k - $30k or even more.

If you choose to adopt internationally you are looking at essentially the same processes although you will (most likely) be working in concert with an adoption agency here and one in the country you choose to adopt from. You will find have to decide where you want to adopt from and then work to find an agency in your area who deals with adoptions from that country. They can brief you fully when you speak with them. The cost for these adoptions are more then for domestic adoptions and the time required could be more or less depending upon where you adopt from.

The third option is perhaps the most attractive for many reasons and thats adopting a child through your State/Provincial foster care system. Although it's called foster care there are many children in that system who will no be returned to their parents for a multitude of reasons and these children are currently in foster home awaiting adoption. The process is very similar to the others and all you will need to do is contact your local office of Social Services and they can give you the complete process. Adoptions through this system are generally free or very low cost. Many, if not most of the children are older (ie: not infants) and all are awaiting good homes to go to.

Foster care adoptions are definitely your best option and I wish you luck in which ever path you choose.

yes you can . but it depends how much your willing to spend because if you go through DCFS you will have no of option who you want and a lot less waiting but it will not be an babies unless it has special needs. but if you go to a place like the cradle you can get a baby but more expensive too . but in most any adoption you will be able to pick a child that is most compatible to you wants and needs. the state will not give you a child that they know will not fit your schedule and time and idea of what you want
