AdOpTiOn HeLp?

I am planning on adopting a baby from russia in the future and was wondering if when you adopt you have to keep the name they gave the baby or if you can name it yourself.

If you mean baby as in infant, I don't see a problem with changing the name. The age group I would have the most problem with would be from about toddler age to early elementary. That would be the age when they are old enough to know their name and not necessarily old enough to understand why you're calling them something different all of the sudden.

No but it could be confusing to the kid.

It's not about "having to" keep the name, it is about honoring your child and his or her heritage and birthfamily. And if the child knows their name, it is about being humane and giving your child a sense of continuity.

There is not requirement. Many families try to work a part of their child's birth name in to honor their beginnings, though. Such as making their birth first name their middle name. Or taking the first letter of the birth name and choosing their new middle name begin with that letter.

I have also seen some adoptive parents choose not to incorporate any part of the name. And other change nothing about their child's birth name.

It's all about individual choices.

Once all the paper work is done and finial and you are filling out a form to get a new birth certificate for the child at that time you can name the baby what ever you want, but I would keep the original name around so when the child gets older they will have something from their birth family.

usually the birth mother can name the baby, but your birth certificate will show the name you choose.

I would say if the child can say their name then you need to talk to them but if the child is a baby then I would think it would be ok. Good luck!!

Ask the child if they would prefer to be called by another name, try it for awhile and see how they react. I say change it so the name won't be so different or maybe give it an american verison. New life, new name - it's how i see it.

allot of ppl will keep the birth name as the middle name and give the child a more "American" name so they will fit in but i would also base it on the name and the age of the child. if it is a baby i would change it.

Legally you can change the name if you so choose.
