Adopt from India questions and some typical responses...do we assume...?
|
I think many here know i am from India. I have many times read a question that pertains to India or Liberia or some specific country and many times a person who has a question about Indian adoption is an Indian themself or of Indian origin.
They often get adopt from "foster care" or "don't do International adoption" or" why not adopt from your own country" responses, which assumes they are Americans .
Which only makes sense if there was a foster care system in India or they were Americans or from a country where there is foster care system.
So do people assume every question that orignates from Y/a is from the country of their own origin ? Or does one stop and think before answering - foster care that to the questioner it may not just apply? This person could be an Indian ! Or not the same country as them. Additional Details LT- The Indian adoption section is in English too as its a common language here that binds us together. And when i have posted in "Indian adoption" section it apears as common for India as well as all to see(Internationally) . Its the language that makes all countries that speak in English apear to all i think. I have noticed there are members from Australia here too. So its not just "America".

I could make comments about how some people figure their nations are the center of the known world and/or the internet but I won't. (Oops, I guess I just did).
I do find that both here and in other areas of YA many people just ask questions without listing what State or Province they are in if they are from North America or what country they are in if they are elsewhere. Questions like "how do I adopt?" or "how much does a foster parent get paid for the children they take in?" are difficult to answer without more details. At the same time though people do tend to assume, in many cases, that the asker is from the US.
You make a good point though. People should not be so quick to make assumptions but at the same time people who ask a question have to make sure they provide at least the basic info required to get a good answer.
+++++++++++++
And as far as this being YA United States...I don't think that is true. I'm answering this question and I look at my browser address bar and it says http://ca.answers.yahoo.com which indicates I'm on Canadian Yahoo Answers answering this question. Regardless of the country you are accessing YA through, the are all interconnected. |

You make a good point, and I realized I'm guilty of that... I assume everyone lives in the United States.
You know the weird part, though? I actually DON'T live in the United States myself! So why do I assume others do? I really have no good explanation, aside from that seems to be the majority country for people on this site. |

Sure there are people from places other than the US that post here (and no I didn't know you lived in India - but that's why I write in the 'source' location below - so people know I'm from Australia) - BUT - the absolute majority of people that do post here are living in the US - by far.
I've been posting in the adoption section now for over 1 year - and over 90% of people that come here looking for a baby to adopt - ARE from the USA.
Adoption just isn't as big a thing anywhere else as it is in the USA. (and in the USA it's become an out of control money making industry - at least infant & overseas adoption through agencies)
Unless you qualify that you're from somewhere else - no one will know - and taken on past posts - chances are that the person asking the question will usually be an American. |

I have to say that not only do people assume you are from their own country, they assume your situation is EXACTLY like theirs. Whatever that may be. Which is so sad b/c with adoption there are so many variables |

We Americans tend to get over-zealous and forget their are people from all over the world that use this site.
You have brought up and very valid point. Perhaps the next time we will all give pause before we answer. |

yes...that is 1 problem here.People usually respond according to region basis & not at a common level. But even they are also not fully responsible because sometimes questions dont have exact information ..due to which people are bound to assume while answering.
I do think that in many cases..people answer without reading the full question.(may be to get points). |

No. If anything I tend to assume that most people are from the states. But really, most people on here are. I'm canadian though, I try to make my answers make sense no matter where you are from. And If it is something that has to do with location i'll say if you live..yada yada then... yada yada... vs just plain assuming and saying something that could be completely useless and irrelevant. But yes the english language would make me think that most people on here are american, UK, Australia, or Canadian like myself. Although there are bilingual people everywhere! |
