Adopt my biological child?

I was told by an attorney that new laws have made terminating a parent's rights not possible unless it is through adoption, (or DHS of course). Now I am being advised that I must adopt my own son which will automatically terminate his dad's rights....anyone ever hear of this?...This is in Arkansas

Mmmm, that doesn't sound right to me.

But...if you want to read this appelate court decision from Arkansas....perhaps there is some weight to this.

You do not have to adopt your child. In order to get his parental rights taken away he will either have to sign them over of you will have to take him to court and proof him unfit. Even then he may still get supervised visitation. If he doesn't follow the rules then he will lose those rights also. I suggest you find another lawyer though.

Never heard of that. If you still have your kid then he is your kid and not anyone else's. The father has no rights to the child in the first place if the parents are split and the mother is a suitable parent. I think they are putting you though a bunch on unnecessary crap.
