Adoptees/APs, Have you seen the movie The Magdalene Sisters?
|
This is the IMDB for the movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0318411/
But what I'm more interested in is the documentary that came on the DVD. If you've seen the movie but not the documentary in the special features, I suggest you get the DVD. Note: It is very sad and could be a painful watch for anyone.
If you haven't seen it, the movie is based on the true stories of several young, single mothers from Ireland who were sent to a Magdalene home to have their babies. They were forced to put them up for adoption and then forced to live and work doing laundry in these homes basically for the rest of their lives. One girl was placed in the Magdalene home not because she was pregnant, but because she was beautiful and boys were always flirting with her which was sinful.
In the documentary you get to see the actual women and hear their stories and the pain of having their babies taken from them. Some women managed to escape the home, and one woman was actually reunited with her adult child that she had not seen since the day it was born.
This was apparently a common practice, and still occurs now.
What are your thoughts on this movie, the documentary, or the subject of Magdalene homes in general?
Again, I'd like to add that while the movie and documentary are very enlightening, they are painful to watch. Additional Details angelaandabby03 - As far as I know there are no longer Magdalene Asylums but it is still a common practice in a lot of places to force single mothers to give up their babies. As far as I know they aren't being kept as inmates at laundries anymore though, I worded that wrong, sorry.
You said: "those poor young women probably just had no where to go and probably trusted whomever lured them there."
You are very right! And in the story of the woman who gave up the baby and was reunited as an adult it was her *parents* that made her go. She didn't want to give the baby up and they took it away from her.

I saw the original movie, have not seen the documentary.
Here is an article by CBS news that has more information about the human rights abuses of these institutions. (Some of the women incarcerated in the laundries were even buried in unmarked graves).

Yes, I saw this one and an even more harrowing movie I only know as "Sinners" but can't find anymore info on it so it must have another name as well.
This happened in many places... Australia also had 'homes' such as this where you had to work all day whilst pregnant and then they would drug you and take your baby away. The hospital down the road from where I live had a habit of tying a mother's arms to the bed so she couldn't move and would place a pillow over her face while her baby was born so she couldn't see her own baby.
Nothing much shocks me anymore... I have read many horror stories and heard first hand accounts... it has been common practise and although on a much lesser scale and behind closed doors, some practises are still continued today in the USA and New Zealand.
If you can, get a copy of the Australian documentary "Gone to a Good Home".
It is a great depiction of the realities of adoptions in Australia from the 50's through to the 70's.

I have not seen nor heard of this movie. It sounds so incredibly sad and tragic. It is an outrage that this can happen in this world today. Those poor young women probably just had no where to go and probably trusted whomever lured them there. I would love to know the info on this place if it is something that exists now.....there needs to be a huge awakening of sorts so that this place no longer can operate. |

Unfortunately, no. I'd heard of it previously and have been looking for it-- I'd like to see it-- but the movie selection where I live is very limited, and I can't find it. It's on the list of things I want to see, if I can ever get hold of a copy.
From what I know of it, the story sounds tragic, but sadly not really atypical of that era, and still continues sometimes today. The stigma against unmarried mothers has been incredibly severe, and still exists, especially in some parts of the world.
ETA: Thanks for the suggestion of libraries, but I actually tried that, and they don't have it anywhere in the area. I should ask my relatives in the United States to look for it; they may have better luck. |
