Adoptees, do you have fetal alcohol syndrome?
|
Do you think the following statement is accurate?:
"It's been recently realized that a very high percentage of adopted children do have some degree of Fetal Alcohol effective damage, which manifests itself in various behavioral problems and many FASD victims end up in and out of the prison system for life. " (This comment was posted on adopting.org)
BTW, how much time have you spent in prison? Additional Details Ollie, this comment is from a pro-adoption site from a pro-adoption person. And yes, it does stereotype both mothers and adoptees.
Why do those who are pro-adoption have these views? It sounds like they're trying to blame their child's bad behavior on the natural mother....could it be that some APs are just lousy parents?

I obviously don't think this is true, but I can actually tell you where they got it. They reversed a statistic. What they're trying to refer to is the fact that a shockingly high percentage of children born with FAS are relinquished for adoption (sometimes due to stigma, but often due to their costly and intensive medical needs) instead of being parented by their biological mothers and fathers.
The person who said this is assuming an untrue correlation from that statistic-- that most of the children who are placed for adoption have FAS, and that is, of course, bull. It's in fact a small minority of the total children placed.
They thought they could reverse "Most children who have FAS are placed" and get "Most children who are placed have FAS," which is untrue and illogical.
Yeah, it's an ignorant statement. But please understand it's from someone who pulled a reversed statistic out of the air, not the majority view of adoptive and prospective adoptive parents. |

No i do not. That study can kiss my adopted butt. I'll admit, the family feared my twin might have had FAS, but fortunatly, he did not. my bio mom tried very hard not to drink once she found out she was pregnant.
I have never been in prison. Neither has my twin brother. The only time i was ever in the back of a police car was when i got beat up by a group of girls and a nearby police officer heard me screaming. That was fun! the looks on my familys face=priceless!
My older half brother, who WAS raised by my father, has been in and out of jail since he was a teenager. |

Did Ann Coulter write that statement?
Nope, I do not have fas, although I do like a good scotch every now and then.
Have never been to prison, either. I stole a pair of earrings when I was 8, but have never broken the law again. Except when I paid for someone who worked in the state capitol to get me my first Mom's name by peeking into my sealed records. |

I don't know about other areas but in my area, and others as well, as soon as a birth mother "admits" that she consumed alcohol during a pregnancy (regardless of the amount) a child in care is automatically given a diagnosis of FASD. Without confirmation of alcohol use (again, regardless of the amount) most doctors will not give a diagnosis of FASD regardless of the symptoms a child may (or may not) display.
For example, our oldest has mild FASD like symptoms but because we know nothing about her past we are not able to get the formal diagnosis, not that it would make much difference. At the same time though, our youngest was removed from her birth parents because of alcohol use/abuse and a host of other issues. She has no discernible FASD symptoms at this time however because her birth mother admitted to drinking and drugs while pregnant she automatically has a diagnosis so that IF symptoms present themselves later on in life we will be better able to access supports and services for her.
Perhaps this leads to an artificially high number of children with a FASD diagnosis and creates the impression that all (or most) adopted children are "damaged" as you say regardless of the level of delays or symptoms. |

Nope. No fetal alcohol syndrome here. My sibling who is also adopted doesn't have it. No jail time either. |

I do not think that statement is accurate. There are four children in my family that are adopted. Of the four, only one had any problems with FAS. We all came from relatively young and completely unrelated birth mothers. We grew up in contact with a lot of other families that had adopted children, and of about 15 adopted friends of the family, only 2 had problems with FAS. Of all these adopted peoples, only one has been in prison. |

What;s high? 10% maybe?
I do not have FAS and I've never been to prison. That statement just sounds insulting! The original poster should have at least put up some references to such an outlandish statement |

FAS is the "new" crackho" bmom diagnosis.
Instead of focusing on adoption itself, which can produce a host of symptoms in children, researchers keep looking for behavior in mothers to demonize the mothers. Then the children can be 'treated' for their 'disorders' and the mothers can be blamed.
FAS is real, but it is not nearly as common in adopted people as researchers claim.
Mothers who have been sent away and hidden in the BSE hardly had access to alcohol. The whole idea is absurd. |

As an adoptee I can attest that I:
1.) Do not have FASD.
2.) I have never been to jail. I was arrested once, however, at age 15 for making prank phone calls. I got a heavy fine, and had to do some community service. (I'm such a lil' menace, aren't I?) I have gotten over my urges to use the phone improperly, and I don't plan on getting in more trouble.
Wow, I love blanket statements... they are so warm... and fuzzy? |

More Hogwash from the anti adoption cult!! Of course I do not have Fetal Alcohol syndrome!! Let us also ask how many UNADOPTED children have this as many years ago one did not know how destructive smoking and drinking were on an infants health. The probability I would imagine would be GREATER for unadopted children.
BTW I thought we were not supposed to unduly stereotype birth mothers on this site. Oh HMMMMMM.....does this not paint ALL birth mothers as alcoholics. You activists want it BOTH ways do you not?? |
