Adopting a baby. Is it as hard as everyone makes it out to be?

A friend of mine sent me a text message of a baby who is in Foster Care. I want to adopt this baby, but I don't belong to any agency or anything. Do I have to belong to a state agency to adopt her? I am married(3 yrs) have one child , own my own home and combined make 85k a year. I stay at home during the day so the child will not go into daycare. What are the odds that I am able to adopt this baby? Additional Details The parents neglected her for 5 months before dropping it off at the hospital. What kind of judge would give them their child back?

Tiffany,
You need to contact your state's foster care entity (DCFS, DHS, CPS, etc.) and find out exactly what is needed to become a licensed foster home. Every state is different, but a homestudy and classes are usually required. If you're thinking of adopting through the foster care system you will not go through a private adoption agency but will work directly with the state.
Go to this site and select your state and click on the boxes that mention foster care. That should get the ball rolling for you. http://www.childwelfare.gov/nfcad/
PS Yes. Adopting an infant through a private agency/attorney is as hard as everyone makes it out to be. |

Just because a baby is in foster care doesn't mean that it is up for adoption. It is always the first priority to reunite children with their parents. Further more, you can't just go to the state and say "Hey, my friend text me about a baby and we make a lot of money, so can I take it home?" You have to take classes to adopt from the state. |

I agree... other people are being rude.
Why argue when she calls the birth mother a name that's censored out... obviously she has strong love that a real mother should have.
Props to you.
Adoption (the process) can take a long time but I think you really could be ready.
It's expensive, but you do not need to be a millionaire to adopt. I was adopted by a very average family as well with a mom who stayed home until I was 8th-9th grade.
My brother was biologically my parents as well.
I think you really do have good odds.
Good luck! |

you don't sound ready to be an adoptive parent. calling this child's birth mother a ***** is obvious proof of that, no one should judge anyone else unless they know the details of the situation or have been in their shoes. Obviously the mother of the child did the best thing by dropping her off at a hospital, knowing that she couldn't care for the child. There is something good in that. You said it yourself, you are 23 years old, have a job, have a 7 month old, and have only been married for 3 years. By the time you go through the adoption classes, home study, etc. they will have placed the baby with a different family who has been waiting and has finished all of this. I have done a huge amount of research on adoption and I can tell you that your odds are extremely small. |

I don't know your odds but it would be a blessing for you and the baby! I hope by God's grace you can! |
