Adopting an infant question?

i was just wondering, if you adopt a newborn baby does the mother choose the name or do you get to? and how soon after the mother has the baby do you get to take it home?

It can go either way. If the mother chooses a name, you can opt to keep it or change it. If the mother doesn't name the baby, the choice is yours. As for us, our daughter's mother named her "J" and we kept her name since it was already a part of her.

The key to when you can bring the baby home is (or at least should be) dependent on when the mother and father sign the relinquishment papers. It would be very risky to have the the baby placed with you before relinquishment occurs. Mothers and fathers change their minds and you wouldn't want the baby reunited with her/his natural family after you've started to bond.

The agency we used has a nursery where they care for the babies who haven't been relinquished by both parents. In our situation the mother had signed, but the father went AWOL so his rights needed to be terminated by the courts. The agency would not let us bring her home until both parent's rights were terminated. She was five weeks old when she joined our family.

Depends on the country and state of where you live.

Normally, the adoptive parents can change the name of the child. However, if later, the child wishes to change their name back or something, then they are welcome to aswell.

In terms of taking the baby home, it would depend on the laws of where you live.

We met our son's first mom before he was born, and were at the hospital during his birth.

She and I discussed names together, to make sure that in no way could the name be offensive to either side of our son's family. When the time came to put the name on the original birth certificate, she asked me, and actually put my last name on his original certificate, along with the first name we'd chosen. She got the original birth certificate application copy, but no birth certificate was ever issued, because adoption paperwork had been filed. I received his birth certificate in the mail, after the adoption was finalized.

Every baby goes home at different times. In our state, it's a minimum of 24 hours in the hospital for infants, because of a blood test done at birth. Because of some complications (1st mom did a dose of meth), he was 3 days old when I got to take him home. Different laws in different states vary.

Generally, the biomom names the baby, but you can change it. My adoption agency didn't even tell my parents that I had a name (which is okay because I don't like my original name ayways :-P)

And going home depends on a lot of different things including whether paperwork is finalized, the wishes of the biomom and APs, the general health of the baby and the way the adoption agency (if you are using one) runs things. I was picked up when I was 4 days old. Apparently I spent 2 days in the hospital and 2 days at a foster type house.

I named my son which I was fully entitled to so so. His adoptive parents had chosen a name for him but I didn't know what that was until I received a letter from them.

It takes 5-6 months for an adoption to be finalized in the UK and I know my son was in foster care for 6 weeks before he went to his adoptive parents - he was 6 weeks old. I was told at this point it was too late for the adoption to be stopped but this wasn't true.

It truly depends in some cases the natural mother will name the baby. The adoptive parents can change the name to whatever they like. In my younger cousins adoption prior to him being born his birthmother told my Aunt and Uncle that they could pick out his first name but that she hoped they would be ok with her giving him his middle name which was the name of someone in her family they had no problem.

As far as how soon adoptive parents get to take the baby home again this can depend in some cases a mother has to wait so many hours before she can even sign away her rights generally its at least 48 hours.

Nice Girl from the corner house
The name is already chosen but you're free to change it.
