Adopting kids from different race ?
|
I'm Asian and I'm not really sure if I want to have children of my own.
Instead adopting sounds like an attractive option to me...kids from South America particularly.
Does it sound strange ?

Yes as others have said, a child is a child regardless of its race. Thats obviously a fact that no one would try to dispute. However some adoptive parents simplify the affects of transracial adoptions on kids.
Separation from your natural mother is a proven fact. If you read "Primal Wound" by Nancy Verrier, you will get to see a side of adoption that is never promoted, but something every adoptive parent and potential adoptive parent should educate themselves about. On top of the "Primal Wound" that affects all adopted children, we transracial adoptees tend to also experience another level of "wound" since we are taken from our cultures, native countries, and the difference in race is a constant reminder of the "primal wound".
Why does adoption sound so much more attractive to you than having your own biological kids?
Why would you choose to adopt from South America rather than adopting through the foster care system or adopting from Asia?
eta: skin color matters a little less to the adoptive parents who chose to make their family interracial than to the kids who have to pay for that decision with a lifetime of stereotypes, attachment issues, stares in public, and constantly feeling like a black sheep. Really, the thought that race doesn't matter at all is a great thought, but extremely naieve and usually said by those who are not in the position of being a minority or having actually experienced racism. |

I would LOVE to hear Randy B's kid's perspective. But only if they were in a separate room and deprogrammed. |

It does sound strange. I mean, why South America particularly? Does it not bother you that adoptions from some SA countries became so corrupt that they will no longer adopt to the US because they got sick of having their children kidnapped for sale to rich Westerners?
I don't get it. "South America particularly," with no further explanation, does sound a bit like a fetish. Plenty of foster kids right here need homes. |

Not at all.
Most transracial adoptions are from Caucasian parents and children of a different race, but certainly not all. Just as any transracial adoption, there are factors to take into consideration and needs of the child that must be met. They are not insurmountable challenges but they do need to be acknowledged and addressed.
best of luck to you. |

nope. The only thing I like about Tom Cruise is a comment he made many years ago when he and Nicole Kidman adopted their biracial child. "there is only one race, the human race"
Other than that, make sure your family is supportive. And your town. There are some "hick" towns or areas that are very unsupportive of what they deem to be outsiders. This child will have to grow up with it and shouldn't be made to be the only one in a town that comes across as racist. |

It does not sound strange many people adopt children of a different race. As long as you can provide that child with a loving home then I would not worry about it. |

You know it would be good to adopt a kid under a different race because it shows to the kid that you dont care about race all you care about is your kid! |

Of course not! It doesn't sound strange at all. Go for it! |

NO. I am white and adopted my son from Central America. A child is a child no matter what race. They are equally deserving of a family no matter where they are from. |

Nope, not at all. I'm white, as is my wife, and we have one East Indian child, one First Nations child and one white one we gave birth to. In my mind and in my experience it's the quality of the family and the love and support that exists in that family that matters more then the colour of their skin. |
