Can I adopt my two nieces (8 & 16) when I don't think their mother is fit to raise them? About two years ago, my sister in-law and her two daughter came to live with my wife, two girls of our own and my mother because she got a divorce and had no where to stay. Now that my sister in-law has been w/ us for two years, we are finally seeing her for for she is. She is right above the level of mild retardation as her doctor told us. She does not have very social skills, does not seem to care for her daughters well being. She cares more about herself first before her daughters. She always threaten to leave but her daugthers always say they rather stay with us then go with their mom. Recently, myself and my sister in-law had an argument and she said I abused her kids and will go to the police. This is a total lie. I have nerver hit my nieces or my kids and even her daughter do not back up her story. I am planning to kick her out of my house but want to keep the nieces with me.
Also, where can I place my sister in-law? She receives SSI, has regular seizures, can't work, can't hardly speak english, and is almost to the point of mildy retardation. Can she go to like a group home? No one in her family is willing to take on her trouble and now I can see why.

You need to get more than CPS involved. Your sister in law needs services too. I think you would easily be able to get guardianship (depending on where their dad is at) and then Adult Protective Services needs to ger involved to intervene on their mom's behalf. These services should be easily accessed wherever your state "doles" out social services, child welfare, etc.
If she is borderline mentally retarded she cannot be expected to make the best choices for herself and her children or someone at least needs to make that decision who is not family.

How about legal guardianship??
She appears to have a sad and sorry life - and you just want to take her kids away from her - and pack her away where you don't have to deal with her???
These kids don't need their identity wipe (as adoption does) to have a loving home.
They also don't need to be separated completely from their mother.
They didn't ask to be born into this situation.
Perhaps start looking at it all from their view. |

And as for the sister in law, if no one wants to help her then she can go toa group home or do whatever she wants. |
