Adopting out of birth order?

Adopting out of birth order?

I've always wanted to adopt a school-aged sibling group that may potentially otherwise be seperated and raised seperately. We recently took in a relative placement who is under a year old. He should finalize later this year.

I understand there is some good research out there...any good sites would be helpful Thanks!

Is this going to be an issue to get older kids placed with us? The baby got all kinds of attention (particularly showers) that I don't think older kids would get, and I almost think it would be better for them NOT to see that. I also know that some agencies won't place kids out of birth order, but mine hasn't mentioned that and they know I want more kids.

(please reverse paragraphs 2 and 3... thanks)

Not with most agencies. You should be fine. We adopted out of birth order and it has been a true blessing for our family! Just pay close attention to the personalities of the school-age kids and whether or not they would be a good fit for your family. http://www.adoptivefamilies.com/articles.php?aid=814

Since the child is only a baby you should be ok adopting an older sibling group but you shouldn't wait until the child is 3 years old because that might cause problems. I know when i was looking into adoption and attending the classes and meetings I was told that if you have a child 3 and up that it is best not to adopt an older child as the "first born" should remain the "first born" but when you have an infant they will usually ok older adoption placments. I would deffinetly talk to your case worker about it :-)

No, because the child is so young, the birth order isn't completely set. Most agencies that I'm aware of are fine with placement our of birth order.
Go for it!

There's some research to suggest that adopting out of the birth order is bad. There's other research to suggest that it doesn't matter.

I think like anything else, it depends on the parents and the children involved.

Some private agencies do not allow adoption out of birth order however foster care adoptions don't seem to have this problem. Since the child at home is so young, now is the time to do it. If you wait until he is 3 or older, this is more likely to cause a problem. I wouldn't adopt over my (then) 4 year olds age and the foster agency understood this. They did allow it but didn't suggest it. I don't know any sites with credible reseach other than a "this is what I think" mentality rather than an actuall study.
