Adoption? How much... PLEASE ANSWER!!?

How much does an average adoption cost? Not international, nothing fancy. I just want to adopt a child and give them a better place to live and grow up.
I'm still a little bit too young, but I'm already researching. This is important to me.
To any of you who have adopted, please tell me all about it. How did you start the process? Did you chose your child? Were there any issues during the adoption process?
Thanks in advance!!

I've done two adoptions thus far, with a third one in the works. Our first adoption was from India and the process was essentially the same as what it would have been for a child in the US or Canada. In India, the process cost us around $800 US but if we had done it from home (Canada) it would have been anywhere from $20-$30 k (in 1992 dollars, more like $30-$40 k now)
Our second adoption was just this past summer and it was totally free. We adopted through our local foster-to-adopt program with Child and Family Services (Govt). In most cases those adoptions are either free or very low cost.
In all adoptions there is a home study in which a social worker or some designated person comes to your home, asks a whole bunch of background and personal questions and then evaluates your suitability to adopt. At the same time there are criminal records checks done, in some areas they do credit checks (but not all areas) and there are also reference checks done. Medical checks are normally required as well. They also enquirer as to what you are looking for in a child in order to make sure that they make the correct match for your family and for the child later on. It's a luxury we don't have for our own children but in cases of adoption they try to make sure it's a good fit.
After all of that it's just a matter of waiting to see when and if there is a match. Once there is one there is more meetings, reports and time to make sure it's right for everyone before the adoption is completed.
Thats a very over simplified version of it all but that still covers it all I think. |

Well, Danielle, what are you looking for?!
If you went to a real estate agent, you'd have to give her your 'wish list', right?
What's your budget?
Newborn white infants? 20-50K, and a lot of legwork on your part, dear. |

We just adopted our child last week. The expenses will be about 15K.
We had to put together a summary booklet telling everything about our family...home size...income levels...health status...etc. Then we had to have a home study to verify everything. All of that just go us on the list.
Depending on what type of child you want, the wait time can vairy. If you want a newborn, the birth mother must choose you from others on the list. This can take years. However, an older child might be easier. Also, the wait isn't as long as if you desire to adopt a special needs child. We didn't have to wait long because we adopted a special needs child.
Good Luck |
