Adoption....Is it really this difficult?

My husband and I are looking to adopt a little girl (baby or up to age 6) as we have 5 boys already. We have been married for 9 years this year and both of us are 33 years old. I am discovering that the adoption process is a very difficult one. I more than understand that the safety of the child is priority and the screening is very intensive...which is great. But why the high costs? We make a fairly large family income but even still, 25,000.00 is a huge amount of money that most people do not have in cash or at the bank. How can this be done with out going into the poor house?

Also, just wanted to point out that I am in Quebec, Canada.

it's so high because the adoption industry is a billion dollar industry. if you research it, you can find lots of info on how much money is made.

foster care is the cheaper way.

Look into adopting through the state agencies. Adopting here in Texas through the state agency is only about $1500, and if you adopt a little girl that is 6 or older your adoption expenses will be reimbursed.

Look into foster care--a lot less money. Haven't you had enough diapers?

If you are in Quebec, why are you not adopting from your local Social Services?

I'm also in Canada. You should take a look at public adoption - it's totally free. Contact Quebec's Ministry of Children and Families and ask about Quebec's "waiting children." Basically, in Canada you can adopt through the province and get a "special needs child." That means it's a child who's over 2 years old OR a sibling set OR a child with disabilities. So, you could adopt a 3-year-old with a newborn sibling, or a newborn who they know will be born with a disability, or a toddler. (Don't know if that makes sense.) Anyway, it's totally free - my understanding from my friend who's a social worker is that you don't even need to pay for the home study if you adopt a child on the province's waiting child list.

EDIT: You can also adopt internationally for as low as $15,000 (Kenya, Ethiopia, S.Africa - if you're Christian - and soon Lesotho). It's only China and a few other Asian countries that cost around $25,000+, and possibly domestic newborns. Also, keep in mind that you can claim adoption fees on your taxes. I think you get about $1,500 back... which isn't a lot but it's something!

The adoption process involves a great deal of paperwork. It can be expensive if you choose international adoptions. I think domestic adoptions are much less expensive because the country (in my country USA) pays for all of the child's care, whereas internationally, it is up to the adopters to pay/reimburse the child care providers for their time and care of the baby.

To gain the funds needed for an adoption, you can refinance your house, take out a loan, borrow from people, make crafts to sell, do fundraisers, use your tax refunds, cut back on everyday luxuries that are usually taken for granted anyway...

Where there's a will there's a way.
