Well first of all no agency can guarantee you a set amount of time at all. Every adoption is different. Some happen quickly and others take years. There is no set way to guarantee you'll have a child in any certain time frame.

Yes, you can choose between girls or boys and even race and age HOWEVER doing so will limit your ability to be matched with a child and you could end up waiting years for a match to come. The more open you are the better your chances. If you limit yourself to only white girls with blonde hair you could be waiting a LOOOOONG time for a child. If you are open to a different race, biracial or either gender and a wider range of ages then you have a better shot at a match sooner.

The cost to adopt depends on what avenue of adoption you take. Private adoption can be a few thousand dollars, agencies average around $15-$30,000. Foster adopt programs are usually a few hundred dollars from the state. International adoptions come with their own issues and rules because you have to work with another government and the expense of travelling. Korea is the only one I know that will escort your child to you but you still have to pay the escorts transportation costs to do so. It can range from $30,000 - 50,000 internationally. Some countries require one stay in country, others several. Those range from a couple weeks to several months depending where you go. For independent adoption you will need an attorney to help with paper work and legal issues that can come up.

Adoption in all 50 US states requires a homestudy regardless of what avenue you go. Some states require a drug test and medical physical on the parents wanting to adopt. Agencies also have their own rules as to how old the parents must be, marriage requirements, etc.. Also, in infant adoptions the parents must relinquish their rights before any adoption can proceed and they can not do so until 48-72 hours AFTER the baby is born.

You can customize an adoption but the more specifics you have the less opportunities you have. flexibility is the key.

It's best for your friend to contact a local adoption agency. They will be able to help out better.

You will become a foster parent. You then will be able to see how the adoption process works. An adoption agency is the best way for your "friend" to understand everything is supposed to go. I know from experience with a few of my friends who have adopted that the process can take from 6 months to 2 years.

Some of the children's parents still claim them as their child and the paperwork and amount of time skyrocket. Once in a while as the process proceeds the natural parent will attempt to regain custody/parent status and the adoption will come to an end.

You can choose which gender and age bracket you are looking for. As for the cost of adoption, the cheapest one I've heard of was for around $5,000 and I've heard of them way over $20,000. (It depends on the state, the age of the child and how involved the parents are).

My aunt has four adopted children from different countries including the US. It took longer the first time, 3 years. The 3 from other countries cost between $35,000 and 55,000 after everything was done. That included fees, traveling and advertising themselves. The American one cost them $40,000 but they might be getting that back becuase the mother wants the child back. In America the birth mother has 1 year to change her mind but has to pay back all costs. it is very sad. They did get to pick boy or girl for all. You have to go through an agency. the advertising costs alot. The more money you put towards that the quicker you can find someone to choose you to adopt. Hope this helped.
